Say a batter is batting right handed and has a 3-0 count and then switches to be a lefty slapper to throw the pitcher off. Would this be considered acceptable? Also would it be acceptable in 10u?

We saw the opposite happen quite a bit at 12u. Girls learning to slap start left, get 2 on em, then switch back to right.

Haven't seen it like you described in high school - but I guess the batter could dance a jig if they felt like it, just need P to do their job. It's high school - keep the expectations low and you'll never be disappointed.

If they are switching to actual hit the ball, I think it is OK.

If the next pitch is a strike and they jump back to the right side, Bush leaque.

Work on throwing strikes and it won't be a problem.

I find the whole unwritten rule/bush league discussions irritating as you are always focusing on what the other team does or doesn't do.

Focus on what you need to do and the rest of the nonsense will not matter.

No rule about switching sides of the batters box, other than the batter cant step across the plate when the pitcher and catcher are in position.

like others said, if they were switching simply to mess with the pitcher, yeah, lame......

and while i agree with Gunner to some extent, none of this stuff should be filtering down to 10u.....there shouldn't be bush league behavior out of coaches, so we shouldn't have to be dealing with teaching kids to ignore it, either

as i said, agree in concept.......we should be teaching kids to handle their own behavior, emotion, and play

but we're talking 10u level.....this is still primarily a teaching level, kids are JUST learning to handle their own behavior, emotions, and play......IF the adult (coach) is simply switching to left slap in an effort to wave the proverbial bat in a 10 year olds face to get that 4th ball, then he/she isn't teaching their OWN kids properly (take a ball/hit a strike).....he/she is putting the W over their own players development, and yeah, that's lame

Do they need umpires permission?

No, a batter does not need umpire permission to switch batters boxes. But, if the pitcher and catcher are in position and the batter steps across the plate to other batters box the batter is out. If they want to switch boxes after the pitcher and catcher are in position they need to request time first.

The intent is to disrupt the pitcher to throw another ball not to actually hit. It was seen in a high school game. Just seeing if this would acceptable in younger age groups.
