Didn't see anything on the search and i'm still fairly new to girl's softball, but what is the reason some states play high school ball in the fall and others in the spring? I always thought all softball was played in the fall until i started reading on DFP. I know baseball has always been a spring/summer sport so I would think having enough quality umpires to call the games was the biggest reason for softball and baseball to be played at different times of the year. My DD and i were discussing this and I figured you guys could give me a little insight. Thanks for any help.

Middle school was in fall, HS spring. Not sure rhyme or reason for it.

Both represent thier own challenges with weather.

Both MS and HS are in fall in GA.

I'm in GA as well, but noticed SC played in the spring. Seemed that some travel teams are just getting started because of middle school ball just ending. Just seemed odd as all other sports go by pretty much the same schedule everywhere.

I think a large majority of states play softball in the Spring.

I know Colorado and Georgia Play in the fall. Iowa plays in the summer, which I've talked to some travel parents and they don't play as a result. They hate that.
I think Missouri plays both in which you get to elect what season to play state tournament in.

So besides CO and GA and partially MO, who else plays in the fall ?

Were in Indiana and all the states around here play in the spring. This includes MS ball.

Missouri does have some spring ball. Only small schools, though.

I want to say GA recently decided to bring back slow pitch softball in the high school ranks. Haven't heard of any schools doing it yet. So GA may end up with a fastpitch season and a slowpitch season. 1 being fall and the other spring. Only time will tell. Up side is our travel season starts early. We had some great weather in february and march so most of our travel season was played in 60-80 degree weather.

Only a few states have Fall softball. I am in GA and have not heard anything about slowpitch in highschool. I think the reason is many many years ago schools wanted to change softball to not conflict with baseball. At that time baseball was more popular, and many schools in rural counties did not have fields for both. Moving softball to fall allowed them to play without competing for same field space. Now that fastpitch is popular it is hard to change the way things are. There are pros and cons to having HS in the Fall. Pros for travel teams who get started much earlier in Spring than teams in other states. They have a longer season leading up to travel Nationals tournaments in late summer. It's not unusual to see college coaches at state playoffs since colleges are out of season. Cons - being off schedule from the rest of the country typically means HS teams get left out of any national ranking discussions. Travel teams in the Fall may just be forming and will compete at showcases against out of state teams that have been together all summer. Another con is HS teams seem to lose players to volleyball which seems to be more popular (as far as school and student support) in some areas.
