Do I have a legitimate reason to pull my daughter from her team?

Well then, I think that she would deserve to play at least another game defensively. No kid deserves to sit 4 out of 5 games. If so then they are on the wrong team, or with the wrong coach. That's all. I already found her another option. Actually two.... she is not below the talent on this team at all. Of course I'm sure you think I'm wrong but you don't know my kid or the kids on this team. Coaches are wrong sometimes. They are either on a power trip, play the clique, play the coaches kids...not all but some.

GG refers to a game guarantee in other word when you enter a tournament your team is promised at least 4 games for their entry fee. So if going into the weekend and your team is only promised 4 games and your DD plays 1 game and the starter plays 3 games and you go home that is what you should expect as a back up catcher. In competitive travel ball (maybe 14B level is not there) it is usually an unwritten rule that only the best 9 in the championship bracket play when it is lose or go home.

You mentioned she is the primary catcher on the school team...ask yourself how much does schools backup get?

The school's back up plays first base when not catching.

You are correct in your assessment and correct that no one here knows the talent level of your daughter relative to the other girls on the team she is playing.

I think you've gotten some good honest feedback in this tread from multiple view points with the best info posters have available.

Only you and you daughter can make the right call on whether or not you should stick it out or fly for greener pastures.

With that said if the the meeting with your daughter and coach doesn't give your DD a warm and fuzzy feeling about her future playing time prospects I'd seriously be looking at those other two options you have lined up...

You contradicted yourself, sort of. If you demand more playing time for you DD, you ARE telling the coach how to run her team. as in give the kids playing time.

The B teams my DD has been on would bat all around, so that every player would always bat no matter what. At least your DD is playing DP, but that means the pitcher and anyone else sitting doesn't get to bat. Makes sense for a HS team, but questionable for a B level 14U team.

I think by now you know the answer. If the coach doesn't give your DD more defensive playing time, this is NOT the right team for your DD. The only question is whether you finish out the season, or else jump ship right away. I can't tell you that. That might depend on conversations you and your DD might have with the coach about playing time. If the coach insists this is the way she's running the team and that's that, or if she blows her top just at the thought of a conversation, that would make your answer easier for you.

And if the coach is really that much of a hot head, maybe it was a mistake to get on the team in the first place.

Well I can see your point, that In a way i am demanding it or we walk. But she can run the team as she sees fit. We don't have to be part of it.

Regardless I think you and your DD have learned some good lessons to take forward. As she gets older and maybe starts playing A level and moves up to 16U/18U, more teams (and maybe most) will be like the one she is on now and will play the iron 9-10 in bracket. That's just the way it is. Some teams do it in pool play to get a better seed for bracket. The whole "right fit" thing can mean two entirely different things to two different players. Good luck.

Don't underestimate the value of a good DP.

From the beginning of this thread, it seemed to me like the writing was on the wall. Sure talk to the coach, but a hot-head, U14B coach who rides the starters not just in bracket but pool play too doesn't sound like the kind of coach that cares about developing players. (or cares about the players at all). From the sound of things, Coach also sounds like she may tell you what she thinks you want to hear, start your DD in the next game and then go back to what she was doing before. either that or deny there is a problem and change nothing.

DD is young. find another team with a better philosophy and bring the fun back into her game. (and get her some experience playing other positions! versatility is HUGE!)

Are there only 2 catchers? Your DD and one other? I'm not sure where you are from but down here in Georgia it's impossible to have one catcher for an entire tournament, we're supposed to hit 90 degrees today and it's only May. If you are anywhere in the south, he will have no choice but to use your DD soon.

Other than that, I think everything has been covered.
