I will give a review after we go. We are only a year ahead of you and I had the same questions last year. On her coaches recommendation we have hit three different schools prospects camps since last summer and it has been a good experience for her. Being around older athletes has pushed her.

What's the report Rambler? Has your DD had the camp yet? We went ahead and signed DD up for the June 20 camp. A couple of her friends had signed up and she really wanted to go, so we bit the bullet

No we changed to one on 6/22 because of the coaches coming to it. Still waiting.

It is true that these types of camps are no more as of next year?

I thought the same thing but just looked and it says they can only work non-institutional camps for pay or as a volunteer during contact periods and evaluation periods. This would limit them to the summer and 4 weekends during the fall on the new calendar.

"Employment (salaried or volunteer) of Division I softball personnel at a private camp is limited to periods when evaluation of nonscholastic practice and competition activities is permissible. Therefore, Division I softball personnel may work noninstitutional camps conducted during the contact (green) or all event (purple) evaluation periods. Additionally, during the contact (green) or all event (purple) evaluation periods, institutional camps may be conducted at locations other than the institution's campus or institution's normal practice and competition facilities.

During the scholastic events only (blue) and quiet period (orange) Division I softball personnel are NOT permitted to be employed at noninstitutional camps. Additionally, during these periods, Division I institutional camps and clinics may occur only on an institution's campus or at a facility regularly used by the institution for practice and competition and Division I softball personnel may be employed at any institution's camp held on an institution's campus or facility regularly used by the institution for practice and competition."

We went to the Hardin camp today in KC. It was great. Well organized. Good showing of coaches from all levels. My DD really enjoyed it. We'll be back.

So DD had her camp yesterday and thought I would post a bit of how it went.

First off, registration was very smooth. It took maybe 2 minutes for DD to get her t-shirt (different color for each assigned team) & armband (different colors for each graduating year), and fill out a little card that they keep her scores on. All total they had coaches from 16 different colleges, and I believe about 80 girls at the camp. The coach to player ratio was crazy good. After the initial introduction meeting the girls split off into their assigned teams. Her team had hitting practice and shagging balls first, then base running, infield and foot work, then outfield work. After that it was onto measurables...20 yard dash, 60 yard dash, overhand throw speed, bat speed, agility course time, and something called blast factor which has something to do with swing efficiency. These numbers are wrote down on her score card so she gets them right away which is nice, but no real way of seeing how she stacked up in certain areas against the other campers. Then it was lunchtime and onto games. They get to play in 4 games that start each inning with different situations. The format they use is great and allows each camper to get in plenty of reps in a short amount of time. Each game had 4 college coaches on the field running things. The day ended with a quick Q & A session that allowed the girls and the parents to ask the coaches questions about playing college ball and the recruiting process. Needless to say DD was pretty spent after it was over, but she really had a great time. It was a very organized camp and I am not sure anything could have been run better than it was. Everybody there...coaches & other players, were amazingly nice & upbeat. The coaches were very personable with the players asking them questions and giving little tid bits of advice. There was some serious talent there as well. Some of these girls were no joke. All in all a very positive experience for DD. I was just planning to drop her off after they got going, but decided to stay all day and not go to work lol.

All that said, with DD going into 8th grade and being a 2022 grad I think it may have been a little early. It was good to get her feet wet a little, I learned some things myself. Not a waste of money by no means and a great experience. She was one of the younger & smaller campers there, but held her own. She did great actually. Made a couple of nice plays in the field, had 3 hits, a few ground outs, some great base running, and only 2 strikeouts (which is pretty good considering she faced mostly high school pitchers). I would say 90% of the girls attending the camp were in high school. Would I sign her up next year? It's hard to say if the money is better spent on this camp or individual college camps that she may be interested in. During the Q & A the coaches pretty much said "if you want us to really get a good luck at you, come to our camp". For some of the older girls the camp may have planted a seed and gotten the first step of a process started.

Mudrunner's dd is sneaky fast as in The Flash fast. When she hits the ball on the ground, you look up and she is already returning to the bag. I saw her at the camp hit a ball to SS and it was ooooooooover before the SS could throw. I give hitting lessons to his DD and so, I asked him why he needed my help. Just have the DD put it on the ground.

My daughter and two of her friends just attended the last Hardin camp of the year out here in the Olympia, WA area. Mudrunner sums it up pretty well. Perhaps the best part of the camp was the QA with the coaches, which for our camp was set up as 4 one hour sessions with two of the 8 teams attending each one (campers are divided among 8 teams). I thought the camp was well run and worth the money just to learn a little more about the recruiting process and to work a little with college coaches, getting their feedback, instruction and advice.
