Riseball is on to the answer.

If you are in a place that is legally public...you can't be stopped from recording because there is no expectation of privacy.

But just because some place is public like the mall...it legally is not...it is private property.

I know some states have laws governing videotaping minors but I would think you would be hard pressed to find a cop that would force you to leave a public place based on your videotaping your softball team and your kid; now there may be laws against posting that video online but not reviewing it for either team scouting or improving your team would be OK.

The issue is however if the property is private they can simply ask you to leave for no reason...but when I say they I mean it has to be the owner or someone with the authority to act as the agent of the owner.

If you are 100% sure of the status of the property I would stand up for my rights...like my old fields where I was on board were owned by the city if someone ever said you can't record I would have said "pound sand and if you touch me or my equipment I'm calling the cops or I can just call them now if you want".

Can we please get a link!

Haha, I am working on extracting the hissy fit from the video so I can enjoy it over and over and over. I do have the play in question and where their pitcher pushed our player's foot off the plate and tried to say our player didn't touch home. Good times in 12U!

I got threatened with a lawsuit over a video once. Very exciting stuff. I enjoy a good hissy fit, when it's not mine.

Was this from the team that had their base runner plow 1B from the blind side?

Yes. Her dad was not happy to have that video out there, even though he swore she did nothing wrong. I took down the video where we'd cut out what happened, not because I was afraid he'd really sue me but just because he asked and I figured I'd be nice.

Did they confiscate all the cell phones from the parents in the stands? Do they post no filming allowed for everyone to see? Unless they make it across the board including anyone in the stands I dont see how they can tell you you cant video the game.

Now, most rule sets do not allow electronic equipment on the field, so it would not be allowed in the dugout and you would not be able to review it during the game.

Tricky issue.

DD 3's HS JV catcher's father videotapes every game. (Not a GoPro, so he uses a tripod to get the camera through the fence). Never a problem.

OTOH, if one is taping minors, one must be very careful. A local politician had his career end partly because he took pictures of minors on a beach near his home. More to it than that. but that generated the biggest headlines.

If someone asked me not to tape, I probably wouldn't. But then I don't tape the games anyway.
