Riseball is on to the answer.
If you are in a place that is legally public...you can't be stopped from recording because there is no expectation of privacy.
But just because some place is public like the mall...it legally is not...it is private property.
I know some states have laws governing videotaping minors but I would think you would be hard pressed to find a cop that would force you to leave a public place based on your videotaping your softball team and your kid; now there may be laws against posting that video online but not reviewing it for either team scouting or improving your team would be OK.
The issue is however if the property is private they can simply ask you to leave for no reason...but when I say they I mean it has to be the owner or someone with the authority to act as the agent of the owner.
If you are 100% sure of the status of the property I would stand up for my rights...like my old fields where I was on board were owned by the city if someone ever said you can't record I would have said "pound sand and if you touch me or my equipment I'm calling the cops or I can just call them now if you want".
