One of my peeves is a coach who insists players slide headfirst but doesn't teach them how.
another peeve is when a BR dives in to a base but is on her elbows when she is tagged out (in other words, she is going in higher than if she went feet-first and has a shorter reach)

so here's my question:
seems to me like a lot of closeplay/outs I have seen at the HS level could have been avoided if the player went feet first.

so when is it to the baserunners advantage so slide headfirst and when feet first?

or does it all come down to which one they can execute better?

I've never taught or advocated a headfirst slide (unless it's a dive back to a base)...I guess if you can execute it well that's fine but feet first works just fine.

A head first backdoor slide at home is very very difficult to defend against. Head first slides are always faster, but you need to be a fast runner to properly execute. Slow or chubby runners are an anchor when they try it. They're impossible to coach the player just has to go for it and figure it out themselves

Headfirst slides should be left to the runners judgement.

Hook slides work best 90% of the time where it's not a force play. Use a rollover (a hook side where you pull the left hand back and rollover on our stomach touching the base with your right hand) when you are late and know the ball is going to beat you to the base.

I can't think of too many times we actually slide feet first (normal slide) into a base....probably sliding into third on a triple or a situation where the runner is trying to beat a force play.
