The worst thing about the marijuana laws is this:

Part of our American heritage, which we get from English Common Law, is the idea that laws should be fair, and that the fair laws should be obeyed by all. No man is above the law. We are a nation of laws, and not men.

This idea is why the Civil Rights movement succeeded. People genuinely believed laws should be fair, and when they saw there were certain laws that were unfair, they objected. For the Brits, that is why Gandhi was so powerful. He showed the Brits that they were being unfair.

When we have a law which most people consider unfair, it corrodes not only our legal system, but the faith the American people have in our legal system.

Remember, FDR campaigned on the Repeal of Prohibition as a crime-fighting tool. Take the booze business away from Al Capone and give it back to Johnny Walker. Seriously, he said Repeal would help the police. And he was right.

I have long felt that legalization and taxation of marijuana would improve our legal system and would help our police fight crime.

Easy to take a partial sentence and use it out of content / context! Example: "Coaches are allowed to have silly rules". Yes sir they are, But ONCE you sign that scholarship offer you have agreed to ACCEPT and ADHERE to the coaches SILLY rules! You think the rules are stupid, silly, foolish, etc, don't accept them nor the scholarship!

On this we agree. I hold the belief that coaches DO have the authority to say "While a member of this team, you're not allowed to smoke" and I don't see any problem whatsoever with it. If players violate the rule, then in doing so, they agree to accept whatever penalty the coach deems appropriate. It's reasonable for coaches of scholarship athletes to have the authority to set and enforce rules for their teams.

A friend of mine is a Federal Prosecutor who strongly agrees with legalization of marijuana. His words..."Stoned people don't go on killing sprees, they just want a bag of Doritos and the couch." Valid point.

Please re read my first sentence in my original post! My issue is the TOTAL lack of respect the young women showed their teammates, coaches and university by not following team, university, NCAA, local, state and federal law by smoking weed! I couldn't care less if they were non athletes, but their flippant attitude to disrespect their fellow teammates, coaches and the very institution that is paying for their education is the problem I have!

Would you feel the same way about a 20 year old football player having a beer at a party?

Again, it's not so much the issue of the OFFENSE, as it is disrespecting your teammates, coaches and the institution that is paying for your education. SO, if it's against team and or university rules, YES! In my opinion, if you are receiving a FREE or REDUCED fee education, you relinquish some rights in order to continue to receive that aid! Among those rights you relinquish is the right to drink, smoke weed, etc, like the REGULAR student body! Is a beer, joint, worth $100,000 plus? NOT to Me, you make your own decision!

I think it has a lot to do with the offense. I can tell you that if I was on a college baseball team and my 20 year old team-mate got busted for having a beer, I would not feel disrespected. I would just think "unlucky you for getting the cop that feels the need to waste everyone's time and money instead of getting one of the other 90% of cops that would just tell you to pour your beer out and "don't let me catch you with another one".

So you apparently are of the "Have your cake and eat it too"group! Your treated special, room, books, board, tuition, and team, university rules mean nothing to you! EXACTLY what's wrong with the ENTITLED youth of today! Rules and regulations are for other people, not me! WOW
