I suppose I'm venting...

My local high school team plays really really weak competition outside of league games. They are a really good team, so that makes very little sense other than to pad your record and your stats.

The other night the team they played looked like a bad U10 team. Every ball hit in the outfield was dropped most of the balls hit in the infield were booted. The catcher threw well, but the 3rd base person, who was using a catcher's mitt for some reason couldn't catch a cold. It just went on and on.

Anyway, I happened to read the article in the newspaper and every girl had 3 hits and 2 doubles, and stole 3 bases.

The coaches know better and the book keeper played college ball and coached so she knows better too.

It just makes me mad to see this team break all the school records dishonestly.

Rant over

That's pretty typical and even encouraged in school ball. When it's time to select all-conference players those stats come in handy when trying to convince others your players deserve the nod. I once saw a high school coach turn to the scorekeeper after his player reached on a slap that was bobbled by the second baseman and tell her to score it as a hit.

... and we have a person who is a serious stats person who doesn't fudge anything. He post the stats and checks to make sure that all stats posted align with what he has in the book. This is another example of speaking in generalities. It is no different in TB though few would admit it.

And that is why college coaches could care less about HS stats and other tales of HS glory.

Would generally agree, however what about Gatorade Player of the Year awards as well as many D1 rosters bio lists high school accomplishments? It would seem that HS stats are not completely meaningless, but I could be wrong?

I already have 3-4 parents on our TB team upset with me due to score keeping. Last year I kept score on GC for the team. If ever in doubt, I'd ask the coach who had the official book how he scored it. He didn't give any freebies so the stats were always accurate.

Fast forward to this year, new group of 1st year 14's join our TB team and a couple parents volunteer to help with GC. I'm thrilled that I don't have to do 6-7 games on a weekend.

First tournament, their 2B boots an easy grounder, up pops a base hit on GC. And passed balls are now SB's. So between games I ask the helper parents not to score like rec ball, that we want the stats to mean something because some of the girls are 9th graders and starting to write schools. They ask what I mean, so I give them the example. Wouldn't you know, they go tell the girls dad and now he's pissed because he thinks I'm trying to take hits away from his DD. So I tell them, I don't care what you give your DD's, just don't score the other kids like that.

Next game... my DD beats out a slap hit by two full steps and the 1B juggles the catch afterward. Guess what pop's up on GC? You bet... E1. lol.

Garbage in, garbage out. HS, travel, and college IME. Safe to say that at least 90% of those keeping an "official" score book would not pass an official scoring test.

Aw, come on man!

Seriously though...they want Travel Balls stats and to be able to see them playing at their own camps?

Travel ball stats are every bit a bad. Maybe worse.

College coaches want to see kids on video and then with their own eyes and at their camps.
