Absolutely would need Demi's written permission to make a statement. This is a core constraint of HIPPA. This subject is covered regularly in team meetings regarding compliance. Unfortunately I suspect that no news is not at all good.

College football coaches answer questions regarding player injuries and availability all the time, although most are intentionally vague.

I'm not sure HIPPA rules would be in place for Patrick Murphy in this case, as they pertain mainly to healthcare providers... I'm sure UA and the coach are just respecting the privacy of the individual, but I dont think it has anything to do with HIPPA.

Actually if she is seeing a team doctor, the school may very well be the provider. It all depends on the organizational structure of the University. If she is seeing her personal PCP that would be a different matter. In addition to HIPPA, FERPA also comes into play. With HIPAA violation fines reaching up to $50,000 per occurrence the school is not going to say anything.

Again the fact that nothing has been said is probably not a good sign. I guess we will know more at 7:00PM when they take the field vs Lipscomb.

Thats a very good point I did not consider, Riseball... I wasnt thinking about school/team doctors, but you are likely correct on that.

Was told this weekend that the picture was not pretty. So far vision is fine but do not expect her back for some time if at all this season.

Most college football players waive their HIPAA rights when they enroll in school. Why is a fair question, wish I had the answer. But, as a state university especially, Alabama has to handle this in conformance with HIPAA protocol. The fines are nothing compared to a possible lawsuit that could follow if they ignore these laws.

Why would football players waive their HIPPA rights when they enroll if other sports do not?

I suspect Sparky is right, and remember, there is no other collegiate sport bet like football, even the NCAA tournament pales in comparison. Also, network TV coverage of college football is unlike all other sports, except maybe men's basketball. The networks put a ton of pressure on schools, who in turn pressure the players, into allowing the networks to report injuries during games. Their argument is that they want the players families to know what is going on so they don't worry as much. The real reason is they want to report everything of course.
