The defense can be anywhere they want, there is no rule about where they can place themselves while waiting to make a play. What they cant do is hinder the offense without possession of the ball, or while fielding a batted ball. What you are describing for the recommended position for the catcher may be perfectly fine, it may not be. Using your own description, if the catchers position "forces" the runner to go to the outside of the plate before the catcher has possession of the ball, you have just described obstruction.

I think that is part of the problem. IMO, umpires are inappropriately concentrating on the catchers and their feet and not looking for the required impediment to the runner. The point here is that the umpire should be watching every aspect of the play as a whole, not just one or two specific parts of the play which is unfolding in front of them

Ya....I'm still sayin' it's interference.

No, you're still sayin' its Obstruction.;)
\
As a U14 coach I once appealed to an ump on an obstruction and he said "which are you appealing, the interference or the Obstruction?" and in the heat of the moment I had a brain fart and chose wrong. (I'm not good with left and right either)

I know this has been beat to death. In response tot he OP, it was a blown call. No obstruction. The catcher had the ball in her possession prior to contact. The runner was not obstructed. Out.

Don't forget that obstruction can and does occur before the ball arrives. If the runner altered her speed or path in any way because of the catcher's position between her and the plate, there was obstruction.

The announcers said something about her not attempting to make a throw, had she attempted to make a throw to either 1st or 3rd, it would have been interference, but since she didn't even try, there was nothing to interfere with. Just what they said, I have no idea.
The announcers talk out of their rear fairly often and that is the case here.
