Waze redirects you around traffic problems and lets you know about any traffic problems ahead. If the shortest way to where you are going is the interstate but the interstate is messed up it will run you though alternate routes.

I really like it when I'm in an unfamiliar area.

Do you guys like Waze better than Google Maps? I have not tried Waze but am curious.

Google bought Waze and uses the info provided by Waze to populate Google Maps with traffic info. What you don't get with Waze is the satellite image maps and the Google info (like reviews of the places you're going to, etc.). What you do get with Waze is closer to real-time traffic updates.

Thanks for the Waze info...I will give it a try.

OP - You also need a good weather app (Weather Bug, AccuWeather)...a music app (Pandora)...learn use you calendar app...and the the camera on these phones is getting really good for video, slow mo, high resolution photos, etc.

I did a baseball tournament down in FL last January. We got to play 2 innings in the Red Sox's former Spring Training stadium before the rain (monsoon!) drove us off. The groundskeepers had an app that showed the lightning strikes - FL apparently has a 10-mile "safety zone", and in addition to obviously showing your location, this one also overlaid a ring showing the 10 mile boundary. Don't know if it was more specialized than weather bug, or it may have been the same app. But whether you live in FL or not, if you're on a diamond or pitch, a feature like that is one we should all be using. (Thank you 4GD - I've convinced myself of the need to find this feature for my own use. Does the weather bug app allow you to pre-set a warning distance? Will also check out Splice)

I like Weather Underground - as it can show rainfall amounts collected by home and school-based weather stations, which helps not only with trying to decide if your suddenly straw-colored lawn is due to drought, or something worse (e.g. disease, grubs, etc.); but can also help you decide whether the field across town is going to be playable. (I live only a few miles from a major airport, and the rainfall amounts b/w the airport and the several stations in my neighborhood can be significantly different when the summer storms roll through).

But for a "just the facts" kind of forecast - I really love the weather.gov site (not sure if they have an app). The local airport definitely comes in handy for this, but the biggest "+" for me is that it's a .gov, and therefore no ads. Weather.com, accuweather, even wunderground takes forever to load on a PC, not just b/c of the ads, but all the moving satellite/radar maps that try to load automatically. The .gov site, even as a web page on a phone, is a lot cleaner (and more accurate than the built-in Weather app on an iPhone)- but Weather Undergound is the only app I've used, so direct comparison is limited.
