We record a lot of games and we get a lot of requests for "instant replay". I always tell them (for weekend tournaments) "Instant replay only comes out on Monday....it would just make you mad today". Video won\t make a difference and I hope it stays that way. IR has no business in MLB, much less than HS softball. Umps are going to blow it. They always have and always will. It's just part of the learning experience.

We always go back and check on things we thought were bad calls, but not during the game. There's nothing you can do about it. But man, this is one really bad call. He must have had his eyes closed.

That is a real poor call. Certainly does not seem to be the case but maybe the umpire said the girl stepped out of the batters box. Can't tell in that video.

If that was the case the HP umpire would have called her out immediately. It's not the FU's responsibility to make that call. I can't say that I've seen worse. That call was really bad.

I try to remain very reserved during games and don't say much. But this one might have had say a few things......

As Sparky said, not only is that the home plate umpire's call, but even if the 1B ump is making the signal, he's not waiting until the throw gets to first.

Others suggested she missed first base, though the girl who posted the video claims he said the throw beat her. I can't imagine he wouldn't just explain to the coach that he saw her miss the base if that's how he saw it.

Even if she missed first base, it becomes an appeal play that must be made prior to the batter/runner returning to first base. There is only one state I know of that does not require an appeal of a missed base and the umpire is to call the infraction when it happens and that is North Carolina. From what I can tell this was Alabama. Would have to hear umpires explanation, but this wasn't even a remotely close play, she was well past the base before the ball ever arrived.

My dad used to ump our home games for slowpitch after our small town fastpitch team closed up shop.

He would make pretty good calls most of the time, but he'd blow some calls periodically...
I'd say, "come on dad!...no new fishing rods for Christmas for you this year...I'm getting you some new glasses!"

He'd laugh at our team and say..."run faster, and then you won't have to worry about me blowing the close calls..." :D

Ya...he never blew a call as bad as this ump did though...ouch

Thanks for posting this video...it's a good one!
