That's more or less what I was telling my U18 batter when the umpire told me I was instructing her incorrectly and that if she stays in the box and he feels that it interferes with the catchers throw, he will call the base runner out.
I'm not saying he is right or wrong- I'm saying we are subject to how the umpires call the game, right or wrong. Therefore, I would recommend my batter understand her options before she gets up to bat.

Then you need to use the word protest with him because standing still in the box is exactly what they are suppose to do during steal attempts (except for plays at hom plate) and it is not the runner who is out it is the batter if he calls interference. Unless the batter is already out on strikes and then it is runner closest to home.

is there a runner on 3rd? and if so, shouldn't the catcher be throwing down *inside* the basline?

Nope. With a right-handed batter catchers are taught to step behind the batter to clear a throwing lane to make a throw to 3rd. So the throw comes from outside the baseline behind the batter.

Edit: I've since asked 3 people who know softball, and all say it's likely accidental. So there.

And that's the beauty of softball. At the end of the day, all we're left with is our opinions, which are likely to be as varied as there are people watching the game.

I hadn't heard that. I know runners are coached to run home on the foul side of the line. I would think that stepping over or in front of the plate would give the catcher a better throwing lane. I guess that's all the more reason for the batter to stay in the box.

I don't know about protesting a bad call. the one tournament where we protested a call, the ump called time, left the field, went to the bathroom, came back and said the call stands. in HS games when the coach has protested a call, the (2) umps talk in private, the ump who didn't make the call says he didn't see the play and the call stands.

What is supposed to happen in the case of a protest?

UIC is supposed to rule on whether the umpire applied the rule(s) correctly. Procedures vary depending on availability of UIC, however many require filling out a form. Regardless, the umpire says how they applied the rule(s) and you say why that was an incorrect application.

He would be correct if she moved within the box to where she interfered. He would be wrong if she held her position.

At any tournament the UIC should be summoned to the field to make a ruling before play continues. In high school that allows protests the procedure would have to be set by the state association. At the very least make your concern with the call known to the athletic association. If the umpire told you your batter had to get out of the box on a steal attempt other than a play at home plate he was dead wrong.
