Interesting comment from Emily Allard.

What are your thoughts?

Somebody call the WAAmbu-lance. Some day my wife will get paid as much for doing her "REAL" job as her male counterpart. Sorry, NPF is not a real job........

When pro softball games average 30,000 paid attendees at $31 per ticket, she'll have the opportunity to make what an MLB ballplayer makes. It's not about the genitalia, it's about the popularity of the sport. Pro softball teams aren't raking in cash, in fact most of them are either bankrupt or heading that way.

NPF teams play 48 games per season and average about 1,500 fans per game league-wide at roughly $5 per ticket. Players generally make about $5,000 for the season. That's practically nothing, more of an insult than anything else. But until the league starts making some money, there's nothing to be done about it.

I do think that women's sports aren't as popular because women play them instead of men though. I mean, what other explanation is there? But obviously until women's sports gain more popularity, how exactly are they supposed to pay the players as much as MLB players? It totally stinks but they should, I don't know, work on marketing the sport more maybe? Add more pro teams? We go watch college softball games at KSU pretty often, less than half an hour from our house. We've gone to GSU and GA Tech games as well. We'd certainly support pro teams but I imagine the demand is still pretty low. I also think the money male pro athletes make is kind of ridiculous. they're playing a game as their job.

My dd is close friends with a couple of Pro Fastpitch players. At least one will not return this year. She can't afford to play. As she recently said, "it is time to change my dreams." That is pretty sad but is the way it is.

A NPF player I talked to recently makes more money giving private lessons, and may decide not to play the upcoming season for that reason.

It is much more than a game. Professional athletes are entertainers who possess a very unique, high level skill set. As such, the market determines their compensation based on the revenue that they generate. If everybody could do it, then everybody would be doing it, and they would all make minimum wage. :)
