Did anybody else catch the Alabama game on WatchESPN on Wednesday? What the heck is up with their signs?

The catcher gets the call from the dugout, checks her armband, gives the sign to the pitcher in a conventional matter. But, after that, she would go through a wild series of gyrations with her throwing hand touching her knees, shoulders, sides, and head.

To me, it was incredibly distracting and further slowed the game down. I couldn't for the life of me figure out what the additional signals were for. Maybe to give the outfielders some idea what pitch was being thrown but then the conventional signals wouldn't be necessary.

Any ideas?

Knowing where the pitch will be is helpful to the defense, runners on or not. An outside pitch (RHB) is more likely going to the right side. Our mid IFs signal pitch location to our OF.

It seemed much more elaborate than just pitch location. It took as long to do as to give the conventional signals. It might have just been location with it being very elaborate to disguise the signal.

As an umpire, I wouldn't have been very happy about it because it was adding probably 5 seconds to every pitch.

Without seeing it, I'm just guessing, but the sequence may also involve defensive plays for when there are runners on base. Keeping the movement pattern consistent no matter what the runner situation is helps to disguise the signal.

I prefer things to be a little more efficient, personally.

If a coach thinks that they are so smart as to be the only who can call a game right, I want to know how they got to that stage! And if they are such a brilliant coach and pitch caller, I want to know why they can't teach those skills to their catchers! And if they don't think that their catchers are smart or capable enough to handle it, maybe the coach needs to go find and talk to the person who put them in the line up or selected/recruited them.

Rant over.
