We all the know the running lane is there when there is a secondary bag that normally is the color orange. Question, Should that running lane exist if the orange secondary base is not there, meaning there is only one single base there?

Purpose on running lane is to provide defense and opportunity to make a play. If ball is foul but in play still runner is allowed to use white bag.

Dropped 3rd strike would be a good example.

Running lane is there regardless of if there is a safety base or even if it is not marked.

Major misconception of the running lane is the batter/runner is required to be in it. Nothing in the rules require the batter/runner to use the running lane, it simply protects them from being called for interference if they happen to get hit by a throw to 1st base and prevent the fielder from receiving the throw while they are in the lane.

So your saying that the runner could be in the field of play if no safety base as long as they don't interfere with the fielder attempting to make a play?

I would add that the runner could be called out for interference even if they did not get hit with the throw, if they are out of the running lane and in the umpire's judgment their presence outside of the running lane interfered with the throw or catch.

The only time the running lane really become an issue is when the play is behind the batter and her being in the field of play could interfer with the throw. If a batter rips a double to the OF wall, and the batter runs inside the baseline on her way to 1B no one really cares...

A good catcher throws the ball hard down the line in fair territory regardless of the position of the runner. After all, a dead ball is much better than a clean out.

The batter-runner can take any path (within the field of play) of their choosing to get to first base whether there is/isn't a safety base!
