As a head coach do you require your players to notify you when they guest play for another team? Do you even care as long as it doesn't interfere with any of your team activities? Does anybody require head coach approval before picking up?

Our club requires coach approval, and DD has actually been told no before, due to bad blood among coaches. Our club also expressly prohibits guest play when chasing berths or standings that directly compete with us. Maybe there's a rule about pickups and what teams they can play on at higher levels? I'm really not sure and I know that smarter people than I will chime in on that.

I do, however, reserve the right to allow DD to guest play if I know it's for her benefit (ie, showcase our club isn't attending) regardless of coach's negative opinion about it. But I sincerely doubt that would be the case, because our club is clear that their goals for the girls are recruiting and they're very supportive.

Got told one weekend "No" by the manager, for the same tourney that the Coaches kid picked up for. Manager said it was against the organization rules, I guess for some.

Different organizations have different rules.

DD 3's team was in an organization last year that required coach approval of guest play.

There are reasons for that. One time she was approved for a Wednesday game, but the game was postponed to Thursday, and the coach felt she was overused in a Thursday league game right before pitching in a Friday tournament.

We play a high level 16u in the Midwest and not only do I not care if players play with other teams I actually encourage it. I even let them miss practice in the winter if they want to play indoors with another team.

I am confident in what we do so no concerns about losing players. If it's good for the player than it's good for our team.

DD has played on teams with a "We wish you wouldn't but we won't say you can't" kind of guideline, one that said "No picking up!" (this team was a very unhappy team; I think they were afraid of people finding a better fit and leaving - half the team ignored the rule, and the team ended up dissolving because the pitchers kept leaving), and one with "Feel free, just don't miss OUR team stuff to do it."

I can see both sides but overall I favor free will. You run a team that's fair and fun and hope for the best. We could pick up all day long and not want to leave our current team. The kid loves it, we love it. If a player is using guest play to shop around, it's probably fine that they go elsewhere since unhappy parents make for drama on a team anyway.

Ran a team this summer taking them to some showcases and tournys 16u. First meeting told them if we ain't you can that weekend. No player loss, no complaints.

It has never been a requirement on any of DD's teams. However we have always told each coach prior to any guest play out of common courtesy, transparency and respect. Guest play was very beneficial for my DD - it gave her an opportunity to play for different coaches, build her confidence and meet players from all over.

Our team policy has always been "You must tell us, but we wont say no"

I just want to be able to say "Yes I know" when some gossip asks whether we knew our Player X played for Team Y last weekend.

I'm of the mindset the more you play the better you get. I typically just ask that I'm made aware your guesting. The only time I ever said no is when a parent told me a coach wanted me to un-roster his kid so he could roster her than I could add her back after the tournament. I said she was more than welcome to guest for any team but I wasn't un-rostering her
