Heard among a group of parents. Some softball parents, some not....

Parent 1 " how old is your daughter?"

Parent 2 "She's 10U"

Parent 1, not a softball parent obviously....."Huh?"

Softball players are like race horses. They age on January 1.
And for some reason, I felt it necessary to explain DD age for years. As in, "She's a very young 14u, though." As we've transitioned from the 10-12-14u lingo over into 2018, 2019, 2020 Grad year, I fight saying, "She's only a week away from being a 2020." Oh for Pete's sake. At 15, it makes no difference anymore!

Up through 14U my DD was "a 98" (her birth year), then at 16U she became a "2017" (the year she graduates from HS)...

Now my DD is a "2021"...her anticipated year of college graduation.

My 12 year old daughter, who does not play softball, identifies age by birth year. Talking about her friends, "He's an 05" or "She's an 03." It's hilarious.

There is certainly opportunity for humor in it.

My daughter is a '99, which makes her an ''old'' 11th-grader. Most in the 11th grade are '00.

If she gets frustrated with younger friend/classmate (non-softball), I might say, 'Go easy on her. She's just a 2000.' Might even throw in, 'She's still in 16U.'

Proud of her seniority, DD is usually consoled at that.

LOL - my DD is an 02 with the "gift" of a mid-January DOB. Easier to just call her an 02 than explain her current age of 15

My DD 3 was born a couple of weeks earlier. I remember talking about her age with her 14U AC a few days ago, which the AC's DD was catching for my DD 3. I got a funny look at first when I mentioned she was 15, which led to a LOOOOONG discussion about cutoffs, and the effect they have on sports. (For example, most NHL players from Canada are born early in the year).

Her best friend was born about 2 weeks earlier, and is 16U. DD 3 was invited to play on that team, but stuck with her 14U team.

So, for 3 days out of every year, my DD 3's softball age and her calendar age are the same. The other 362 or 363 days...

I understand the "young" thing. DD has a September 2001 bday. She is young for travel and really young for 2019 class. She will start her senior year as a 16yo.
