Good Quote about college

DD had an Honor society indoctrination thing the other night and the guest speaker said something that really stuck with me :

"Colleges are not vocational schools. They do not teach you to make a living as much as they teach you to make a life."

I had heard something similar before- just wanted to share.

That sounds kind of snobby to me. I get what they’re trying to say about colleges being more than learning skills for a career. Taking a shot at vocational schools isn’t really necessary.

I like that quote, a good reminder to match expectations with the type of higher level institutions available. As a proud "techy" and now a current MBA student I think that is quite accurate and not offensive at all. BTW, you can add the military as a 3rd option for a different expectation and educational path!

Either way the onus is on the student to get what they want out of the education/ experience and as it relates to this forum also choosing schools for athletics.

the term " vocational school" was not used derogatorily, it was describing the expectation that many parents have which is that the only reason for college is to get trained for a specific (assumed to be high paying) vocation.

its the "If I'm paying THAT kind of money, you better be getting a good job when you graduate!" mindset. (which I understand)
