A couple of weekends ago we were at a Tournament out of State (neighboring State) and ran into a lady who works for National Scouting Report, a recruiting service. She asked if she could talk to the girls during a break. We agreed and she spoke about the recruiting process and what she could do for them. She was interested in one of our catchers and watched a couple of our games, and talked to the parents.

Come to find out last weekend, not only did she sign the girl up for the recruiting service, but this recruiter also coaches a Travel Team and invited the catcher to her practice, then offered her a spot on her team. The girl accepted (although I don't believe she actually researched the team as they have a roster of 18 and she makes the 5th catcher).

Does this happen in the other parts of the Country? I know at least with our team, if a girl contacts us about leaving her current team, we instruct her to finish out the season, and if she says she quit the team, we always contact the coach and talk to them about the situation.

Yeah, I guess a little bitter because we turned away a few girls because we already had the catcher positions filled.

NSR was at one of our tournaments last year and facebooked me and the other coaches a few days prior asking about a few players. We never responded to it and when approached at the tournament we asked for their brochure and said we would talk to our team and have interested players contact them. As far as recruiting services taking girls away that's new to me. But other travel teams will take a player in a heartbeat and pull out all the tricks trying to secure solid players. Had the AC of my DD's HS team trying to recruit my DD to another travel team and the coach knew I was a coach lol. They don't care, it's about gathering up talent for a lot of people since most don't have the skills or ability to develop their own.

We're in a younger age group but I've had multiple coaches offer DD a spot when they knew we were committed. Some of them try to be diplomatic, some don't bother. There's a line here, in that IMO it's ok for a coach to express interest. It's nice to know what your options are. But I think they should be careful and not try to poach girls like this one did to you. I don't think that's right, and also, why do you want a girl who will jump ship like that?

LOL well we didn't know she would jump ship like that... We picked her up during tryouts, but have played against her several times so we knew who she was, well player wise. Don't forget this coach is a salesman... The parents did say that the recruiting service was $3,500.... ugh.

I should also add, after doing research, the team gets kids recruited to the same size schools as we do... guess I really don't get it.

To a person, every coach I've heard talk about these recruiting services HATES them. The Mercer coach told us they can immediately tell emails that are sent from girls who use them and they get deleted immediately. What a scam. $3500??? Highway robbery. College coaches want to hear from the girls (warts and all), not from a slick recruiting team.

I meant for the coach who took her. If she'll break a commitment to you, she'll do it to them too. It doesn't sound like she was in a crappy situation, she just got romanced. Lots of coaches are salesmen, too often of the bait and switch variety I've noticed.

That all seems really shady....That chick was a fraud!
Be your own recruiting service. Contact your top 20+ schools and express interest in them all. Send them video of your players. Send coaches invites to your games, Send them stats.... don't expect much in return. Bottom line is you should be doing all you can and not so dependent on these bull $hit services!

I'm pretty sure I saw her this weekend. Dressed in Black with a NSR logo polo. At first I was thinking college coach until I saw the logo. I heard she was recruiting players for her team.

Fastpitch Cares Tournament? Yes she was there.... There was a snafu with Tournament ASA and signing up (we signed up Mid Aug) and we didn't get into the Tournament. In retrospect it's probably a good thing we didn't go HAHAHA

Yes, if you'd gone you might not have a team anymore! I know of a couple of other teams that thought they were in that tournament and didn't get in.
