Are club teams required to play in a league in your area?

In Minnesota, if you want to play in the ASA state tournament qualifier or the state tournament itself, or if you want to play any type of ASA national tournament, you must play a minimum of 6 league games during the season. When we lived in Ohio, league games were for rec teams or very low level travel ball teams, so this concept of basically requiring ALL club teams to play in a league was very foreign to us when we moved to this area. I have to say that South Dakota has a similar rule. So I'm wondering if perhaps this is just a midwest thing or maybe it is more widespread than I realize. If you could respond with your state and whether club teams are required to play in a league I would appreciate it. I don't need more than one response per state. Thanks!!

So Cal
For So Cal, ASA-A is for travel ball teams, and there is no requirement for connection with a league. ASA-B and ASA-C are for league/rec ball. A has State, Regional, and National championship tournaments. B and C each have their own District, State, and National/Regional tournaments.

NorCal
Nor-Cal here. Pretty sure A level ASA has no league requirement but B/C are typically associated with rec leagues as Eric mentioned for So Cal.

It's common for SoCal members to refer to their SoCal State Championship as "state", however CA does not have a single "state" tournament due to having 3 state associations (i.e. SoCal, NorCal and CenCal). It's just the largest of the 6 state/metro associations in CA.

Some associations (e.g. NorCal ASA) have/had a "pre-qualifier" requirement of playing in local ASA sanctioned event(s) in order to play in their championship. It doesn't matter where they place in the pre-qualifiers, it's just to force teams to play in other events.

Teams in our region qualify for Western Nats via their local association championship. TB teams just have to play and rec teams have to place high enough for a berth. We don't have qualifiers for Class A Westerns like some associations have in the Eastern and Northern territories.

Along the lines of what canyonjoe mentioned, in So Cal, TB players also playing rec must stop playing TB by March 30, or will not be eligible for their league all-star team.

Yes. Good additional information. Placing in A-States can qualify a team for A-Nationals. No placing qualification is required for A-Western Nationals.
