where a pitcher only pitches and doesn't hit or play a secondary position? I'm just curious how often that happens.

What age group are you talking about? Does this sometimes happen at 18U, sure it does but it also happens on a lot of college teams. Heck I've even seen it in HS ball.

It happened on my daughter's 18U A team this past season. When needed in an unusual situation she might play an inning in a different position, but very rarely.

edit to add: correction - I missed the batting part of the question. This pitcher is a good hitter and was always in the lineup.

Not here.

Doesn't hit. Would be a red flag for me. My DD has been on teams where the pitcher only pitches but, also batted. Eggs in one basket comes to mind.
College is different.

Not only did DD play on a 18U team where one player was only a pitcher, but this same player also openly questioned why she had to participate in defensive infield drills after openly stating "I'm a pitcher, I don't play defense." And the coaches basically capitulated since mom and dad were big boosters. Needless to say, DD wasn't on that team very long.

Uh, that would have been DD on her last team. She actually got to hit in last two tournaments. Finished .278 on the year with 0 K's. Prior to that she did almost 100% of the pitching. Coach didn't bat her because when you have to pitch 4 games in the heat, she wanted her in the dugout hydrating rather than on the bases. New team now so don't know where she fits yet. This was at 14U, now playing 16U.

I know of a few teams that do this, but it is rare. DD was offered a spot on an 18u team last year that worked this way. For DD, it was a deal breaker. She likes playing the field and absolutely loves hitting. Personal preference I suppose...

Best hitters hit. If a pitcher can hit she will hit. If she can play in the field she will. As you get higher in level pitchers who only pitch become more common.
