NAFA Nationals games starting tomorrow have temps predicted near 100 with heat index of 115-120. Do the umps call time pretty frequent for water breaks for the girls? Worried about heat exhaustion.

Not until the umps start dropping like flies and they will too. A few years ago it was 108 in Cary, NC and our kids played. We were spraying them down between innings, putting wet towels on them, everything to cool them down. It was DD's last time in shorts but I was glad they had them.

I have never seen where an umpire would call time for a water break. I have seen where the coach will request time to give either the catcher or pitcher water, and the umpire grants it.

We went through roughly 50 bottles of water per game last week in Orlando. Frogtogs/towels in ice for all girls. Cold frog tog goes on your catchers head before she goes out to play. P & C call time out ALL the time for water - we have never been denied. Offer the umpire water, towels and also a spot in your dugout in the shade between innings.

And we are from Florida so we play in these temps all the time.

Must hydrate 2-3 days before. Top up ALL day long. You CAN NOT get hydrated during the day - you must come to the field hydrated.

Good ones often tell catcher she has unlimited water breaks. Don't forget the umps, we need to be looking out for them. Several dozen "went down" at Top Gun KC, and we saw several scary symptoms like forgetting what was going on. I think they feel an obligation and push themselves too far.

Yeah.... at USSSA worlds last week we played 9 games (almost won it) - the umpires were averaging about 25-28 games for the week and many were doing the younger kids this week - so that will be 50+ in 100+ degree weather. That is a LOT.

We play in GA, FL, and AL. It's often mid-90s to 100 and VERY HUMID. I will sit there in the shade watching and feeling like I'm going to die or throw up or maybe both. I don't know how the kids do it. We've been playing travel ball for 2 years and rec before that and I've never seen an ump call time for a water break. I have seen coaches run water out to pitchers or catchers though.

Most of the umpires in the hot climates are smart enough to have their own water and cooling towels, etc. While we always appreciate the gestures from teams offering water, gatorade, towels, etc., it becomes kind of a no-win situation that if we accept it from one team, it can present the appearance of favoritism to the other team, so most umpires should politely refuse.

As far as the players and water breaks go, I will always tell the coaches and especially the pitchers and catchers, that if they need some water to let me know and we will call time to let them get some or have it brought out to them.
