I don't know if I'm posting in the appropriate section for this. If I've posted in the wrong section, please move to the right section or I'll repost. But I'll have at it.

I know that my sister and I haven't had exactly the best teeth in the world. My brother had gone through braces when he was 12...but I wasn't paying attention to what he went through and she's too young to really remember. I had walked into the kitchen and heard our parents talk about us getting braces at the same time. I didn't say anything to them that I heard. From what I'm hearing, were supposed to be going for our first appointment in a couple of weeks. What was things like for you or your daughter when they got their braces? Did you/they have a lot of pain? What was the first days like? What was the process like? Did you have to wear a month gaurd while playing softball? If so, what kind of mouth gaurd would be best?

Thanks.

braces questions...

Thanks.

My DD just had her braces off after just over 2 years. Mouth is sore for a day or so every time they adjust them but never seemed a big deal. Couple of ibuprofen or Advil and she was fine.
Game wise my DD just wore her Rip-It fielders mask. No mouth guard.

Now they are out she ALWAYS wears her fielders mask. I am not paying to redo all that again.

Yes, you will be sore for a couple of days when you first get them on and then maybe a day after adjustments. Nothing a little ibuprofen can't help.

If you are catching, you will be well protected. ;) We have an infielder who wears the facemask and an outfielder who wears a mouth guard. You might ask your ortho if he/she recommends a mouth guard.

Best of luck!

My dd didn't have the option of a rip it facemask at the time and so, wore a mouth guard. Do what you are told! I had a player not follow their instructions and had a wire break in their mouth cutting it pretty badly. (Not in a game but running around.)

The good news is that nowadays they are much more accurate with their estimates for time you will be wearing them. if they say 18 months, it will be 18 months! when I was a kid I had many friends who wore braces. they were all told it would only take 1.5 -2 years but it was closer to 4 years. both my DD's had them and neither had them a day over 18 months! they liked being able to change the colors too. also what the others said about discomfort and ibuprofen was correct in our experience too. DD #2 doesn't handle pain as well as DD#1 and she would only be uncomfortable for a day, maybe two, after. DD#1 never indicated any problem.

also- Yes you need a mouth guard if you're not wearing a mask. I didn't spend the big bucks for one from the dentist, I got the kind that are available at sporting goods stores that you can custom fit (Shock Doctor?). DD#1 wore it for hockey as well as softball.
good luck!

They make mouth guards for braces. My son gets it for football. It has a top and bottom piece. Face mask is good too. After the first week or so they will be fine anyway - except when you go for the "tightening of the wires" visits. I try to schedule them strategically !! Good luck

Braces are a lot better now than they used to be. How uncomfortable you will be wearing them depends on how badly your teeth are misaligned. A mouth guard is always a good idea, but is not a requirement.

I'm kinda nervous about getting them. A few of my friends were getting them near the end of the school year and would tell me of the discomfort they went through. Our (my sister and I) initial consult is on Thursday @ 10:30 in the morning. We should be getting molds done that day. My friends that just got their braces had their braces done in trays and then installed around a week later. I'm going to be getting the ones that I can get colors.

You should always have a mask on, although if you play outfield it might be a good idea to get a mouth guard, I have seen some players wear mask in the outfield but not sure I would recommend it.

My DD would always take Ibuprofen right before getting adjustments and usually through the next morning.

I wear a facemask Everytime I'm behind the plate since I'm a catcher.
