I guess maybe a difference is that these HC all were assistants under old guys like me. For example, the HC in baseball played HS for me and then was my assistant for several years. His assistant played HS for me and was my Assistant. It is the same in a couple of sports including softball. I'm an old man! LOL!

Would be nice if there were really good candidates available, make life a lot more comfortable, doesn't mean your gonna be a winner all the time, just if they could teach the game

Tks for the responses, kind of the way it is here, first up has first dibbs regardless, not a sports minded board sorry ti say,

That is a really important point. When I came to the school I am at, it was known for losing. The Superintendent had had it. The Board hand changed dramatically with the previous election. So, the Superintendent decided that he would change the focus on athletics. Basically, over half of the coaching staff at the HS was released. Every coach went to a year by year evaluation and hiring which was a drastic change for this community. An emphasis started in the evaluation process that stated that good teachers and good coaches have exactly the same qualities and so, successful candidates had to meet both expectations. Coaches were told their expectations both in private and then collectively in a coaches meeting. As I once pointed out, at my first coaches meeting, the AD pointed out to everyone that I was hired to be the HC in both baseball and girl's basketball and if I didn't win, I'd be the example. I didn't mind, I knew we were going to win. For a school system to change, it has to include the Superintendent, School Board and the Principal of the school. The principal of the school I became the baseball coach at was tired of his school losing in baseball and he wanted that change. He was such a great resource and so supportive. I am somewhat abrasive and so, every once in a while, he would call me in, tell me that I had ruffled some feathers and then, TELL ME GOOD AND GET AFTER IT. LOL
