Georgia pitchers (and others) wearing a mask

I am happy to see these girls (Wilkinson and others) wearing masks ON THEIR OWN and still getting time in the circle. Hopefully the stigma is wearing off.

ESPN even did a little blurb about her and the others wearing it and that it is becoming more acceptable. They may not limit concussions but they for sure limit the other physical damage done.

I was at a coaches clinic at Tennessee a few years ago and me and the Vols Head Coach had words about Masks on pitchers. They of course thought they were weak and need to play defense better and I was like OH, really. Anyway, we agreed to disagree. But if I am not mistaken. The first pitcher the Vols had tonight was wearing a mask. Hmmm..I wonder what happened there... I bet I know. ;-)

It is great they are doing it on their own and it is good for the game. Almost like they were adults capable of making their own decisions without input from the front seats of the mini vans. Amazing!

While people are understandably worried about the top-down effect, there is also the bottom-up effect. Girls who played with masks are getting into college and don't want to give up useful protection.

I was at DD 3's 13u practice yesterday. At one point they were doing infield drills. It was suggested that any girl who wore masks in games should put on their masks. Every girl on the team put on a mask. One girl was worried that the mask might give her acne, but said acne was easier to deal with than broken bones in the face.

This weekend we played 7 games. In game 2 my DD was pitching and had one hit back at her. It got her in the shin hard enough she didn't even finish the play. She just dropped. She is a fast, athletic kid and a great fielder. She plays short stop when not pitching. And she had no chance to get her glove in front of that ball. I mentioned to her when it was elevated and had ice on it and she was feeling a little better, imagine if that had been several feet higher. Without that mask it would have been pretty awful. She said, "It still would have hurt." Um yeah, but you'd still have all your teeth and no broken nose! Her new shin guards will be here tomorrow...

I enjoyed watching GT play UGA recently. Only 1 pitcher out of the 3 or 4 that pitched that game on both sides didn't wear a mask. Love it.

I saw LSU pull off a triple play and I'm wondering how the pitcher could've possibly reacted so quickly initiating the triple play while encumbered by a mask that is the hallmark of a weak player.

Obviously fielding masks become more acceptable and subsequently more popular. Another less discussed aspect is that the skills of those wearing fielding masks has improved. While you can make a compelling argument today that wearing a mask is not the mark of an inferior player, a few years ago that was not the case. When masks first started to appear many of the players wearing them has suspect skills. Thankfully things have changed since then.

Not to take anything away from those wearing a mask, but it was anything but quick. It was more about awful base running than defensive prowess.

RB fair point and I agree, but I wanted to seize the opportunity to dump on those coaches with out of date thinking.
