So I'm putting this question out there in hopes of some good feedback.Alright so the defensive strategy for runners on 1st and 3rd what is a way safe and effective way to keep the runner at 3rd but not just give up that free base everything with the runner just automatically taking second base?Does anyone have any plays that work great for them??Thanks for the help

Following! So far in 10U I've seen a girl manage to keep them at 1st and 3rd exactly one time. I think it was the 2nd baseman who got the ball and just managed to stand in a spot where she could get the ball to either home or 2nd quickly enough to get them out. More luck than strategy.

we will sometimes fire the ball to the ss running in, doesn't stop the steal but enough to catch the runner at third sometimes.

If you throw the runner out at 2B, it will stop the automatic steal. It's rare a coach wants to give up an out to score a run that they will likely going to score if they have less than 2 outs.

I'm not so sure about that. There are lots of times I will take a run even if it costs me an out.

I would have a few plays then.

1. Get the runner out at 2nd
2. Throw to SS coming in, give up 2nd
3. Throw it to 3rd.
4. Just ignore the steal
5. Never done the throw to 2nd baseperson but some people here really like it, not sure how it works

Colleges seem to be able to throw it down then back to home if they are going but they also just leave them steal depending on the game situation.

Once you throw it down for an out, the throw to SS works great to get the lead runner.

But you're talking, for the most part, about players that are throwing overhand speeds in the high 60's to 70+ MPH. IMO, yes, there are some game situations where college teams will just let them steal, but each situation is different. If there are 2 outs and they have a catcher throwing 70+, they will take the out 95% of the time since it won't give enough time for the BR from 3rd to score before the out is made.

At the younger levels where reaction time is slower as well as the throwing speeds for the most part are concerned, that's where cut plays, just throwing down in the hopes that the 3rd base coach and BR aren't paying attention etc. etc. come into play. My personal favorite is to have my catcher leave the ball in the glove and fake the throw hard as if she is actually making it. Often times, the BR sees the empty throwing hand and assumes that they've actually missed the ball release going to second. Then it's an easy tag out at home. This also gives the added protection of an accidental ball slip on the fake throw ending up rolling towards the pitcher and the run scoring.
