My opinions on these type things are often in the minority here, but in the name of broaching a good topic, here goes ...

I find images like this one below to be annoying.

What is the message here? Is it intended to comfort those who are afraid that someone who competes hard in a rough sport isn't feminine?

I see a similar message in team photos where the players put on dresses and take pictures w/ bats and gloves, as if to say, ''Don't worry, they're still pretty girls!''

To be clear, I have no problem with any individual girl who relates to this image. If that's who she is, that's great.

But what is the point of this particular image and caption?

Anyhow, those are my thoughts on that.

Every woman (or man) gets to define her own femininity or brand of womanhood. Different imagery will speak in positive - or negative - ways to different personalities. Focus on that which you want to grow. There's nothing inherently sexist about the posted image. It's a photo with few words. It's a matter of perception, of interpretation. If anything, it suggests that a young woman *ought* to do sports and high heels.

I personally object to suggestions that any individual should be stuffed into some predetermined box based on x, y, or z, but I'm in the minority in the U.S. and worldwide, so what do I know?

Cool shot, Perfect Circle!

I absolutely do not think that image is sexist in any way. It is trite, and it plays on a tired theme of the duality of being able to play sports and be sexy, but that is not sexist. But then again I also don't think that the lack of black actors as Oscar nominees for two years is racist so what do I know.

I am going to start a new ism....ismism. It is a condition I suffer from where I automatically think anyone claiming an ism is a wuss.

Not you Coogansbluff, you are totally cool people, just everyone else who does this, they are scatrats.

Rather than a bunch of men debate what is or is not sexist, perhaps we should ask a woman.

My own personal believe is that the caption suggests a "real" girl has two sides. The image says, "EVERY Girl has Two Sides".

Guess what? Not *every* girl does. Many don't like "dressing up". And, since I have a 6'3" DD...she never wears high heels.

What about asian drivers? we can all agree that is one stereotype that is 100% accurate right?

all kidding aside, I really do think political correctness is far more pervasive and dangerous in today's society than any of the lingering isms. I prefer a world where everyone is equal, and everyone is a a valid target for jokes...

I like what momosdad said.
I want my kids to be themselves, not a label. I've known people who have struggled with what label to put on themselves.

Once upon a time there was a bit if the tomboy--girly girl dichotomy, but with the understanding that many girls were a little of both. It was also not assumed back then that the tomboy would be a lesbian. Peppermint Patty still got to have a crush on Charlie Brown.

(Interesting thing is some lesbians are more feminine than some straight tomboys, but that is a different issue altogether.)

The good side of this is it shows girls often have both a tomboy and a girly girl side. I've shown prom pictures of DD 1 and her friends to softball coaches to see if they could even recognize the girls all dressed up. But those girls would sometimes play softball with nails all done just so or hair tied up in just so...

The bad side is it might say girls SHOULD have both sides, when some girls wouldn't be caught dead in a dress and others wouldn't be caught dead in a uniform.

Still, this just reminds me so much of the two sides of DD 1 and her group of friends.

And DD 1 is 18 today and it seems like yesterday when I took DW to the hospital ...
