Here is my situation. My 10u daughter is playing for a big organization, with a awesome coach. They have been very good to her. We have played a fall and a spring season with this team. My daughter was injured most of this fall, so I'm not counting this fall. The trouble is they are a hour and a half away. That can make it rough . I have two other kids about to start basketball and baseball. We left a team to go to this big organization because they weren't playing "A" ball at that time. Now they are,and they are in my backyard. I can't tell how good the big organization has been to us. The coach has become a friend, not to mention very well connected . I hate it ,but it would be better to stay close to home. What's the best way to tell this great organization and coach?

Just because an organization says they are A doesn't mean that they really are. There are A registered teams out this way that have won less than 10 games and lost more than 50, but hey they are registered A... Are you sure you want to make a move away from a proven winning organization with good connections so that you don't have to drive. Even if the move is amicable they will fill your daughters spot. Who knows if you are able to get her back to that quality of team by 14u, or 16u. Remember your decision isn't a 1 year decision. Is driving the only reason you would leave, or are there other factors?

If your DD was playing 16U I would recommend staying with the more recognized team with recruiting connections, but for 10U it is tough to justify the additional time and effort it would take to make it work, especially with other kids you are trying to accommodate.

Well, if it were me I'd probably stay. Mine's 10U also and when we were looking for a team this year we made half an hour of drive time the max, but if we'd gone further and found a team we loved I'd probably want to stick. Who knows what the other team is like now. Maybe you could try picking up with them in a tournament and see? Then switch if you like what you see. I hate the idea of driving that far and I do think it's kinda crazy for 10U. Still, a team you love that much might be worth the time. It's a really tough call and I could definitely see going either way.

At 10U it is pretty easy. Just explain it is a family decision about spending more time together versus driving in a car all the time. Tell him you really loved playing with them...keep the door open to guest or maybe play several years from but for now the location is not good for your family. It's a small world and when you run into him at tournaments make sure to go say hi and keep up a good relationship.

I've always been a little baffled by the team tryout announcements that say "don't let distance be an issue." But, if we're talking about weeknight practices with the team, distance IS an issue! At least it is in Atlanta (unless you own a helicopter, of course!). I understand that some elite teams have players from all over and even out of state, but I don't think they are required to come to weeknight practices. Presumably, they're taking private instruction on their own in lieu of that. For 10U, I would make the decision for the family as a whole, especially if you have other kids (as I do). I know that we hear about people separating the family so that one kid can pursue a dream (Hollywood, ice skating/gymnastics, or whatever), but I think that's quite extreme.

Most of the marquee teams in GA have players from across the state, and some have players from other states, so they usually on practice on the weekends. If they do have weekday practices they are optional.
