Game should have continued, but with an out every time your DD's spot came up to bat. Would only be a forfeit if she was ejected.
Bingo! USSSA FP Playing Rules...

Rule 5, Sec 2. PLAYING SHORT is an exception to Rule 5.1 above . A team shall be allowed to play with one batting position unfilled. The batting position the team cannot fill shall be designated as the absent player. When the absent player is scheduled to bat, an out shall be declared for each turn at bat. A team may play short under the following circumstances:
A. A team may continue a game with one less player than is currently in the batting order whenever a player leaves the game for any reason other than ejection and no substitutes are available.
1. If the player leaving the game is the batter or a runner, they shall be declared out. Exception: If the player is injured, the player may be replaced by the player not currently on base who had the last completed time at bat. This exception does not apply to any future time at bat.
2. The players who have left the game cannot return to the lineup.
Exception: a player, who has left the game under the blood rule, may return.
B. A team may begin the game with eight (8) players in a 9 player lineup. The absent player shall be listed in the ninth (9th) batting position and the team will be required to take an automatic out in the ninth position in the batting order. under no circumstances shall a team be allowed to have less than eight (8) players in the batting order.
C. The team may not play short if there is an eligible substitute available. If an eligible player arrives, they must enter the game immediately.

It is lousy when you have to forfeit a game because of a hurt player, I have seen it in baseball a couple times. There is just no good way to do it.

If you carry more players, this doesn't happen. Some coaches only want 10-12 girls on their teams. I've been down to 9 girls before with 15 girls on a roster.

OP here. There are 11 girls on the team. One was out of town. Then we lost catcher #1 and then catcher #2 in subsequent games. That put us down to 8. I hope that Coach doesn't get spooked and decide to add another catcher to the team! I'm glad, at 12U, that we don't have a gigantic team and girls don't have to sit the bench all the time.

Yeah, I agree. Sitting a lot stinks especially for the younger girls. Under most circumstances 2 catchers is plenty! Sounds like a freak thing.

I agree with you, small Roster. Something unusual happened, move on take the 1 lose.

Yeah, not a big deal in the grand scheme. We weren't likely to trophy at this particular tournament anyway. It's just that all of us (coaches included) were baffled by this forfeit rule. Seemed very out of the blue.

OP, Are BOTH the girls ok? As it were, I am just hoping the DR visit(s) were precautionary.

We really thought that Catcher #1 had dislocated her elbow. Turned out to be a bad bruise and she showed back up with a sling and a smile on her face (HC's daughter).

My DD got x-rayed and did not have a break, but it is swollen and sore. She has a blood blister or something under the thumbnail (it is green!). No sports for 5 days, but she's otherwise fine.

She has blood trapped under the nail and that's why it hurts so bad. The nail is going to eventually come off. You can relieve a lot of the pain and pressure by poking a red hot needle through the nail and draining the pressure.
