Question: During tryouts for a local 8U travel team, they had my daughter use a bigger glove. Right now, she has a mizuno pink and black 11 inch glove that she has been using since she was 6. Does she need a bigger glove? Do you have any recommendations for a glove that will last her? I am thinking about getting her a new one for Christmas. She turned 8 in August, and plays pretty much any position they put her at, besides catcher and pitcher.

A lot of college infielders and pitchers use a glove a little bit bigger then that with the 12” ball. I might go a little bit bigger but not too much.

We had good luck with the Jenny Finch glove.

If it becomes part of the conversation she might need a different glove, once she makes the Team she can use what she wants.

We got my DD the Jennie Finch 12" Mizuno for her 8th birthday. She's been using a little over a year now and loves it.

I would not go bigger than 12" and would not spend a fortune on a glove when they are that young. Getting a glove that is easy to break in and easy to squeeze is more important than longevity at 8U. Ebay and Play It Again Sports usually has a good selection of youth gloves that are already broken in and gently used.

I think that glove is fine; I would buy it new though.

You do not need to break it in and their price is not very good, it should be about ½ that used.

For an 8 year old I'd try to find an 11.5" glove and probably no bigger than 11.75". It's hard for them to catch a ball in those little 11" gloves. I don't know the model number off hand, but Mizuno made a couple nice mid grade 11.5" gloves in the $75-$100 range.

Can I highjack a little? Rather than starting a new thread?

I'm looking at getting my DD a first baseman's glove. She has the glove I posted above for when she's pitching and that's what she's using at 1st too. Right now she plays 1st in usually all but one game per tournament. I see a lot of 1st base gloves that don't seem to be designated for softball v. baseball. Is there a difference? I think having a 1B glove will be helpful because our main short stop had one hell of an arm and supposedly it takes some of the sting out of those hard throws. Input?
