It just came to a head last night after my DD showed me her basketball schedule and her theater arts schedule. DD has BB tourneys lined up for the same 3 weekends as her showcase tourneys. BB coach has already been giving her a hard time about missing some things due to softball. Now DD has a play the same days as BB and softball. Something is gonna have to give! I just fired off an email to the high school BB asking for a meeting to discuss how we can work together to make this work for at least the next month.

Any suggestions?

DD gave up the saxophone freshman year and basketball after her sophomore year for just those reasons. But it was her decision-she had to decide what her priority was. Good luck!

Fortunately for me, everything not softball and church fell to the wayside by HS or before HS for both DD's, so I did not have to go through this...

Sounds like your DD might have to pick what is most important to her and expect that choice to break someone's heart (either yours or your spouse's)... My wife was devastated when DD#1 came in and announced that band wasn't cutting it for her... My wife was devastated again when DD#2 came in and announced that gymnastics wasn't cutting it for her... So, I "won" twice but to this day my wife takes a dig at me about both from time to time...

If doing BB and softball, the sport that's in season should take priority. DD's sophomore year was just too busy with softball, bball, church and girl scouts. Something had to go and it was bball.

I agree let her decide what is important to her. IMO the TB Coach doesn't think very much. I understand it's a "Showcase" but why not just go dark during the HS year? We encourage the girls to do other things/sports in HS. We will hold "Open Gyms" starting next month but it's not mandatory, encouraged, but not mandatory. I will always believe that the "in-season" sport takes priority.

Just say no. Point to an article stating college coaches like multi-sport athletes and say sorry, You knew she played BB...if that is the case.

This is a pervasive myth. College coaches like athletes. A common trait of which is the ability to play multiple sports. Just as basketball players tend to be tall. Playing multiple sports does not make you an athlete, and being tall does not make you a basketball player.

If this was just a normal tournament I might feel otherwise, but it is a showcase. My DD would attend the showcase over the BB tournament. Now, I have made an assumption that she wants to play softball in college, and not BB. Am I correct? Otherwise, who cares about playing showcases.

Remember as a coach you have to work for the entire team. What if a handful of girls want to attend(and are good enough) schools in Arizona and New Mexico, but your team is based out of Oregon? As a coach you have to get the girls in front of those coaches. If there is a big showcase in November/December in AZ that will have 4-5 of the targeted schools at it then you owe it to the girls to play in it. After all, they are playing in the showcases around Oregon for the other girls to be able to get their exposure.

As to priority. I will always believe that the game that you dream of playing in college takes priority. If that is softball then so be it. If not, then maybe a showcase softball team isn't the right fit.

We are talking 3 Showcase Tournaments that are the same weekends as BB. So why should the BB Coach have to give in for softball? What about the BB Team? Not saying this is true because the OP doesn't mention it, but what if she is the best shooter on the team and the offense is built around her.... would you still attend the Showcase Tournaments?
