She had concussion number 3 last spring and dropped travel after the season ended. We thought HS ball with its much shorter season would be less risky. Unfortunately, she got concussion number 4 at a HS tournament 3 weeks ago tonight.
She lost several hours of memory on that day and she's still having symptoms and isn't back to school full-time yet. The neurology department at Children's says this is hanging on longer than a standard concussion and it's actually post-concussion syndrome. Her school wants to set up a 504 plan and honestly (with the amount of work she's missed and her inability to work on a computer, work with graph paper--her trig and engineering classes are both heavy into graphing--and just generally concentrate and handle the hubbub of school), I think it's a good idea to slot her in as disabled for now.
I can't see her playing any more. Even if she doesn't catch, and we'll never let her catch again, just letting her be on the field sounds too risky to me. I've seen plenty of position players get concussions.
I've really enjoyed being on DFP and talking to you all. I may stop in now and again, certainly not as often I'm sure, but I wish you and your daughters all the best...and NO concussions.
