DD's team plays in upcoming Ronald McDonald 18U Tournament/Showcase (weekend of 10/30). They just released schedule, and as it turns out, they are scheduled to play two Friday morning. As much as I would hate to do it, she may have to miss full day. We are strong advocates of staying on top of academics. The fields are close to school (about 10-15 min) but she has to be there to warm up at 9, and they won't finish 2nd game until 2 p.m. (school lets out 2:25 p.m.). Another look at this is she will have a couple of schools watching her play...so could be an angle of "looking at colleges type of day" off? FYI - she is pretty good with grades, has all As, etc. With this heads up, she can get ahead, if possible. Just curious what your thoughts are on this...

I'm probably in the minority but if my kids went to school I'd definitely let them miss one day for softball, assuming they didn't have anything major going on that day that couldn't be made up. So much of school is just wasted time and busy work. IMO she'll get more out of the day playing softball. It's just one day & her grades are good. I don't see the harm.

They earn the privilege to take a day off for anything they want to do if they have good grades. Go to the opening of Stars Wars for all I care.

If they can't handle missing some classroom time in HS to play softball, they have no business thinking about playing college ball where you might miss a week at a time. She should be just fine, play ball.

My DD has missed school on more than one occasion for a softball tournament. As long as she is diligent about making up the work she misses we do not worry about it.

DD will miss a day and a half in November to travel to a tourney. Missed a day and a half in September for a different tourney. She is an excellent student and talks to all of her teachers in advance so she knows what she will miss and even goes in and takes tests early so that it doesn't create a hardship for her teacher. In our state you can miss 5 classes-on the 6th absence you have to either go to Saturday school or lose credit in the class. Since DD's school uses an A/B day schedule she could technically miss 10 days if it fell right. But grades are the bottom line-she earns the right to miss class for softball by her grades. If they fell then we wouldn't allow her to miss school (as much as it would kill me) for softball...

You said she has all A's; as long as she coordinates any missed work with teachers ahead of time I don't see any problem.

If she wants to go, I would go. I am a former school teacher and I believe that she will learn more being with you at softball, than she will at one day of school.
