I have my first group of seniors coming through our program. We are looking for some ideas to honor them either throughout the year or at the end. Please share!!

Have a "Senior Day"....schedule a "who cares who wins game" late in the season (i.e., a non-conference rival) for a "friendly" game at the end of the year. (Too many times, coaches schedule a conference rival, and end up playing for the conference championship, and then some of the seniors never get a chance to play.) Start all of the seniors.

Get "my first softball game" pictures from their parents and put them in a scrapbook, or use them in a video.

Saw this at Senior night ( soccer ). Take plenty of still pictures all season. Burn a DVD with a slideshow and music. They will love it and enjoy those memories for a long time.

Continuing with the picture theme, the last two years I have selected the best "action photo" of each senior and converted it to a mosaic comprising all the other team pictures accumulated during the year. In one corner of each mosaic, I include a small image of the original image. The first time I did this, the girls and their parents thought I was a computer genius and had spent weeks working on it. It is not easy, but 90% of the work is done by a free computer program.
The more team pictures that you have, the better the results, so ask for digital copies whenever you see someone taking pictures. However, the program allows you to reuse the pictures as many times as you dictate. If you frame the mosaic pictures, it adds to the affect.
It was a BIG hit.

The program is Andrea Mosaic and is available at:

We have a senior day for our last home game. The seniors all start and their numbers are put into the outfield fence with Dixie cups. Stick a cup in a whole, make it form the number. Not too complicated. We've also done posters. Girls that have aged out of our 16U have received flowers and plaques with their names on them.

We play a senior night game, try to choose a cupcake opponent, move the field to a bigger field with lights and better seating, and also make it our Youth Night so all the girls from the local youth program are given the night off from practice and a free hot dog and drink if they show up to watch. Also add an announcer for the game.

We have a senior night dinner. Two years ago, the daddys fired up the grill by the field and had smoked Boston butt barbecue. Last year, we had it catered and it was in the cafeteria (raining). The team members make each senior a card, reflecting on the years playing with them. Last year, I pencil sketched each senior from a photograph of them playing and then added pictures around it in the frame. The year before, decoupaged pictures of the seniors onto wood pieces, along with sports articles about them. This coming season, we are getting new uniforms and knew that at the end of last season. The seniors had their jerseys presented to them in a shadow box on senior night. Just a couple of ideas.
