Based on my experience, tryout notices are like real estate listings. There are certain code words that really mean something else.

All positions open and earned- Coaches Daughters will play their preferred positions and their friends will occupy the rest of the infield, all positions in the outfield are up for grabs.

Looking for girls to add to a strong core- Team drama caused half of the team to bail so we need 3-5 players to field a team.

Looking for committed players who are ready to take their game to the next level- We do not know how to develop players or instill accountability so we need girls that are basically fully developed and self motivated.

all posts that have 4 paragraphs about the Org's success but nothing about the specific team's success typically means the teams stinks...This is also known as the Firecracker rule.

Seeking dominant pitcher- We cannot defend or hit, our only hope is a lot of strikeouts but we are too stupid to realize that no dominant pitcher would ever join our team but we can dream can't we?

Seeking bit bats- Coaches daughter is a sub par pitcher and needs a lot of run support to survive.

If we haven't recruited you during this season don't bother showing up for tryouts. :)

Hilarious! Keep 'em coming! We got the expected word last night that dd's org is folding after nationals, so this thread could not be more apropos. It will be dd's first "real" tryout season in 4 years.

DD is a utility player, again this year she played a couple innings at every positon on the field.

Is looking for a utility player a code word for looking for a player to sit on the bench?

My favorite is this variation: "We have a solid core of committed girls and we are just looking for 2 pitchers, a catcher, a SS, and a CF and we will be complete!"

Not always. Sometimes it means the team currently has weak spots at lots of positions.

Hilarious! In fact, at Heybucket there is a 14U team currently looking for this: Pitcher, Catcher, SS, 3rd, OF, to play with a "a great core group of core players".

I saw that too....cracked me up. Not to disparage the team, I am sure they are a fine group of athletes and coaches, but you can't say you have a great core and then post for every position that usually makes up a core.
