Has anyone tried the iOS speed radar Athla Velocity?

(Disclosure - I am the CEO of Athla)

After two years of R&D, we have released Velocity as the first and only professional, hands-free iOS speed radar app that has been calibrated to within +/- 0.7 mph of a $1,200 Stalker II Pro - but it costs less than a movie ticket.

Feel free to contact me or email us with any questions.

Your device has to be set down on the field - so Velocity is good right now only for practice on the field or in your own backyard. Otherwise, it would be great to hear the thoughts of the community.

Below is our favorite review so far from the app store from a pitcher.

"...Found the right arm slot. I got the app to check the difference between my fastball & off-speed pitches. Had some initial problems getting it to work without internet access, but Mike Gillam worked with me to get it sorted out. Great customer service! Took my IPad out to the local field to test it out. Warmed up at 39-45 mph and worked up to 77-79 mph. Not too shabby for a 61 yr. old grandpa. Off-speed pitches were 59-66. The app helped me find the best arm slot for this old body. Pitched a 4-hit shutout in my next senior league game. Thanx Mike & the team at Athla!" --signed The Old Cannon

Interesting. Your material says: with Apple's latest hardware....what does that mean? Which generation of iPhones or iPads would it work with? are their specific hardware bits that require the very latest versions?

Also: could you describe HOW it works?

Feedback: price is great. consistency is key. wouldn't even care if it was a bit slower or faster than a gun, as long as it was consistent -- that's what you need to do comparisons and track progress: consistency.

PS-Your Web site isn't loading properly for me, is unreadable in places (looks like the background isn't loading properly, fyi).

I am curious how it works too. Speed camera not radar?

On your website it shows an iPad off to the side of the thrower, I have never seen a radar that would shoot from the side of a moving object.

Made me think it was perhaps only an interface for a true radar unit so sped could be easily displayed.

basically it just uses the high speed camera in the iphone\ipad to measure the distance per frame on a moving object. That is why it has to be set up perpendicular to the path and at a certain distance (20) feet. If there is no blur and the FOV/distance constant is accurate then it should work well.

Here are the answers to your questions.

Hardware: Athla Velocity requires an iPhone 5+, iPad Mini 2nd Gen+, or iPad 3rd Gen+

How it works: Velocity uses the camera in the device and scans the field of view 30x per second to find the baseball in as many frames as possible. Using that data it calculates the actual speed in front of the device.

Speed: It is as fast as a doppler radar and just as consistent. Here is a video showing it live along with a Stalker II Pro to show its accuracy: https://vimeo.com/119107826

Website: The Athla Velocity website should be fine now. Feel free to try again.

A third party plug-in seemed to have broken all the images for some reason. Strange timing - it has been working for months.

It should be working now. Feel free to try again: www.athla.com
