My son's baseball team uses gamechanger and I'm trying to figure some things out. I'm more old school and generally look to batting average, rbis and slugging percentage, but gamechanger also calculates "quality at bats" and it has me scratching my head. In his last game of the day, the DS went 3 for 3 with three line drive singles. Gamechanger shows that he went 3 for 3. Batting average of 1.000 for that game (brag moment he went 5 for 6 with 4 walks in his first tournament). But when I check out quality at bats for that game, it shows that he had 2 quality at bats out of 3. Again, he went 3 for 3 with three line drive singles. But apparently one of those singles didn't count as a quality at bat. So my question is simply.. WTF?

GC used to define it as 6+ pitches per opportunity if I remember correctly. It's been a few years since I used it. However, that's different than QAB%. I don't know how what formula they use for that.

One of the criteria is hard hit ball so if one of the line drives was considered a popup that fell in or just a normal but not Hard hit ball it will show as not quality.

QAB's are calculated using the formula below:

GameChanger QAB - [(2-strike at-bats ≥ 3 pitches seen) + (at-bats ≥ 6 pitches seen) + (hard hit balls) + (2-out RBI’s) + (sac bunt) + (sac fly)] / (total # of plate appearances) = QAB %

As far as move lead runner up w/ an out: I would consider a situation in which the batter keeps the at bat alive long enough for the lead runner to steal a base or two (or three, esp. with WP or PB) an excellent AB, no matter what happens on the final pitch.

I don't get the idea that seeing a bunch of pitches makes an at-bat 'quality.' ...

If you see 8 pitches, that means you swung and failed to put the ball in play at least 2 times, if not 8 times. It also means you had 2 strikes on you for at least 3 pitches, if not 8. Quality hitters avoid 2-strike situations more often than poor hitters do. It's also possible that the 8-pitch at-bat should've been a walk but that you swung at a bunch of bad pitches, fouling many off.

QAB is a subjective term that was created because an applicable objective stat(s) was not available. Attempting to boil it back down to specific stats is self defeating. There is no correct or universal definition. You make it what you want it to be and things such as hard hit balls and other subjective information is often included.

I always compare team QAB%, and have found that there's a strong correlation between a large difference and wins/losses (the larger the difference, the greater the probability of a win for the team with the higher number).
