I revived this thread and everyone ignored me ... haha ... kind of what it's like being in my house with all females. :)

So I'll try again ...

Do you guys consider ANY hit a quality at bat? Is a weak blooper over the second baseman considered a quality at bat in your opinion or only balls that are hit hard? I've seen a few differing opinions on this.

I most certainly consider any hit a quality at-bat.

We were in a tight game not long ago and our opponents pulled their IF in when we had a runner on 3B and one out. Our hitter reached out and poked a low and away pitch and lofted a very weak liner just over the pitcher's head that landed about 3' in front of 2B then trickled out into very shallow CF for a base hit. If the IF was at normal depth, she is out. However, in that situation, all we needed her to do was get the ball past a pulled-in IF, and she did her job. QAB, as far as I am concerned even though it was about the weakest hit she could have possibly gotten that result from.

If it is an actual hit, then YES I would consider it a quality at bat... Also, a hard hit ball that causes an error (scored as an error not a hit) would be a quality at bat... A hit that results in an out but drives a run in would be considered a quality at bat... An unforced error would not be a quality at bat...

I don't get the idea that seeing a bunch of pitches makes an at-bat 'quality.' ...

If you see 8 pitches, that means you swung and failed to put the ball in play at least 2 times, if not 8 times. It also means you had 2 strikes on you for at least 3 pitches, if not 8. Quality hitters avoid 2-strike situations more often than poor hitters do. It's also possible that the 8-pitch at-bat should've been a walk but that you swung at a bunch of bad pitches, fouling many off.

I don't see that skill on display in the travel ball that I watch. Not saying that certain hitters don't protect the plate better than others and foul off balls that others might miss, but I don't see any TB players that intentionally do it. I also think that it is exaggerated as a skill in MLB. I think MLB hitters at the last split second are thinking, 'just get a piece and stay alive,' but I don't think they are routinely fouling off tough 2-strike pitches as a strategy to induce a better pitch. Just my opinion, though.
