Being a father of two high school aged boys, I have asked them about wearing cups for sports. They told me years ago nobody wears them for baseball except the catchers. In football nobody wears the in HS and I know nobody wears them in the pro's either. I'm not saying this is a good thing I'm just saying what they told me.

My DD plays 12U and every player on her team wears a mask. But it's her choice, I'm not sold on them. I understand the safety part but I feel only the pitchers and maybe the corners should have them on. And the part about the corners is some coaches don't know what their doing and sometimes move them so close to the plate that a Kevlar suit wouldn't help. Something else I noticed was that because we play a 14U schedule you hardly see any masks. At times it seem like we are the only team that wears them.

Here's a good test for players wearing a mask, have them do a practice without them wearing them and see what happens.

Just going off subject a little does anyone know of any studies for wearing a heart gaurd. I heard in the past that they can cause more damage then good.

Can you please explain your reasoning behind this comment. What kind of harm can wearing one of these do? Locally, we have had 1 boy and 1 girl get hit in the chest and 1 boy got hit in the head with a glancing blow while pitching in the last 15 years. 1 boy that was hit in the chest was able to be revived due to someone in the crowd knowing CPR although I have heard this is quite rare. The girl passed away in the circle almost immediately. Amy recently posted about another boy who never lost consciousness, finished the practice and walked around for several hours before collapsing and dying. Apparently, the shot to his heart sent it into a weird arrythmia which it couldn't get out of. I see no reason whatsoever why masks and heart guards would do more harm than good.

This "college coaches won't recruit a player with a mask" statement drives me nuts. Am I wrong thinking that if that statement is correct then college baseball recruiters should be doing "cup checks"- the same logic should say if a baseball player wears a cup then they don't trust their fielding ability (sorry if that isn't appropriate for a softball forum but geez lol) or a catcher crazy enough not to wear shin guards is more trusting of their fielding ability and therefore a more desired recruit??
Cups, shin guards, helmets, or masks... its irrelevant! Protection comes in all forms. While we're at it, let's get rid of batting helmets too. If a pitcher can be expected field a batted ball traveling in speeds up to 90-95 mph, then batters should have no problem at all avoiding that measley 65 mph pitch.
