DD was taught the smack her fist into her mitt during the delivery, to distract the batter.

Words cannot describe how much I hate that. Our 18u DD who has playing for 11 years says that it doesn’t distract her at all, nor does it distract any of her teammates. The only people it affects are people like me, I guess. People who are annoyed by all the extra effort spent beating on a mitt for a purpose that doesn’t achieve its original intent.

Also, our DD moves quietly. For her it’s not that it gives away a pitch location with all the “noise” she might make in the dirt, but more of an impact on her knees. As I mentioned in the above reply, she’s been behind the dish for 11 years and will be for another 4. That much bouncing around would kill her knees. Also, she moves really late so the runner at 2 (if there is one) can’t tip off the batter about location. At her level, the pitchers are hitting their spots more often than not, so she can afford to do that.

For as much as DD was taught to do that for the purpose of distraction, it seems to me she does it more to psych herself up than anything else.

That’s fair. There’s no place on the field for a catcher who isn’t focused.
