We created a video that illustrates where the hand should be (IMO) to be best protected. There is no way to totally eliminate the risk of getting hit by a foul tipped pitch. These methods greatly reduce that risk. Even the pro's mess up and get hit. It's best to train early and have the hand protection become ingrained in muscle memory. Plan on giving your catchers plenty of reminders. Please try to keep your reminders to just one or two word coachings while they are behind the plate. :)

DD was taught to put her hand nearly behind her leg, can be on outside a little, she actually while learing this placement (as oppoose to behind back) used to stick her thumb into her shoe just barely, not thumb kind of sits on top of Achilles. gets it in throwing position fast, but still protected pretty well by her leg.

DD has caught for 10 plus years and has evolved from behind the back to behind the calf to buried in her belly just under the chest protector. She learned this from a pretty good AAA catcher and used it the last 5 years. She says it helps her get her hand in a helping position much faster.
