I was always taught for receiving the pitch, the catcher should have their thumb down, arm almost horizontal. I have seen a few posts on here that have me questioning those positions. Reason I am questioning also is that my DD recently sprained her thumb. She does have small hands.

My DS sprained his thumb as well, we now are using the Team Defender Pro. In all my research, I think it was pretty conclusive to not have the thumb down. He even had a little league coach telling him to put it down, and I told him to smile, agree, and still keep it up. The NECC dvd that is mentioned here often also backs the fingers up method.

Right Here For Now
Thumb should be at the 3 o'clock position at initiation of the pitch and the arm should be out at almost full extension with a slightly bent elbow upon the receive. the thumb will change position upon the receive depending upon where the pitch is thrown. I.e. the 12 o'clock position on an inside pitch, the 6 o'clock position on an outside pitch and over the middle part of the plate. In order to understand this better, I highly recommend going to www.catchingcamp.com, sign up and download their livestream video from their store/program tab. It'll be the best $40 you ever spent if it's still available.
