First base mitt instead of catcher’s mitt?

I didn’t mean to start a debate about Coach Eriksen’s philosophy with this. My DD worked with Savannah Jaquish over the winter break and she used a catcher’s mitt. There are merits both ways. I was merely asking about the pros and cons.

Debates are good! That’s why we come here. It helps us all learn by sharing experiences. With that said, I still haven’t heard anything from the 1B mitt club to change my mind, lol!

For a catcher struggling to keep the ball in their mitt, I recommend any Mizuno H-web. The pocket on those things is super deep, and likes to hold on to the ball.

Great suggestion. My other catcher uses a well used Mizuno H-web and DD used it last weekend at our tournament. The difference was massive. We are attending a demo day tomorrow so I will be having my DD try on a few mitts and probably picking her up a new one to start breaking in.

I see it mentioned a lot in other posts so I’ll add a question to my own thread.

My DD uses a Vinci fielder’s glove and we love it. It’s been mentioned that the Mizuno has a deep pocket and I think that will be a big help for my DD. How do the Vinci mitts compare in terms of pocket size and performance?

DD is a Mizuno to Vinci kid. As discussed before, the difference in padding is night and day. The 34” H web Mizunos MVPs have a huge pocket. Easy to catch with, but but you almost have to pull the ball out of that deep pocket. The MVP is also good for 2-3 seasons max. It really gets floppy. The H Web 33” JCV-VM Vinci’s are notably more shallow when new. They both stretch over time and get deeper. I have DD’s web relaced every year bc she likes a shallow pocket for a quick transfer. Can’t speak on the JCV-34 which has a solid web, DD has never used one. Don’t be scared of the mesh on a Vinci, it’s tougher than the leather!

The JCV34's pocket is notably shallow (very similar to a Wilson A2000), especially compared with the Miz MVP. For my DD, the change from Miz to Vinci was dramatic enough that she almost gave up on the Vinci. In a last-ditch effort to make the Vinci useable for my DD, I contacted Vinci and had them send me an H-web. It took a little bit of creative lacing to make it work (slight difference in hole pattern from the solid web), but it made enough difference for my DD to be comfortable with it. She loves it now.

Back on the dirt...
I also bought the custom Vinci mit and had the solid web initially. DD struggled a little with dropped balls due to the shallow nature of the web. I recenty Had it changed to an H web and its just enough deeper to be easier for her to hang on to the ball. DD is a very young 12 yr old. Hands are pretty strong but that mit was just a little tough for her to squeeze the ball on. If she was older the shallow web would be great IMO.
