We just had our tryouts over the weekend and I think tryouts went really well IMO. I had one little problem. I was trying to catch a pitcher that is significantly taller than I am. The pitcher in question moved to our area within the last few months and decided to tryout for our team. She is around 6'4" and is around 14 inches taller than I am. I was standing around, talking to her during one of our breaks and found out that her family moved here from out west for her dad's job (her dad works with my dad). She seems like she is a really strong, hard thrower and should get better. But I'm wondering is there anything different I can do to catch a pitcher that is significantly taller than the catcher?

Nothing different that you should as a catcher. The strike zone is pretty much the same and the pitcher's job is to get into the zone and catcher's job is to catch it.

Not sure how the height of the pitcher effects the way you catch her. The only difference may be that taller pitchers have longer leavers (arms and legs) and it make take a pitch or two to get used to their timing. In theory a taller pitcher also has the potential to throw harder (with proper mechanics) because of the previously mentioned longer leavers.

It did take a little while to get used to how she threw. Once we got into a rhythm, we never broke it. But she does throw with a good bit of velocity and throws hard. The glove really popped when the ball would hit. My hand stung even inside my palmgard from her mid 60's fastball.

Just toss your helmet on the ground and stand on it when you need to get in her face about not throwing what you call. Other then that, you shouldn't see a big difference.

Ask Carlee Wallace, 5'2" formerly of Auburn, who caught Lexi Davis, 6'2". Quite an image when Carlee went out to the mound.
