... at the TV while watching MLB catchers who can't execute a simple, fundamentally sound block! I don't even care whether it's ruled a WP or PB, trying to field or scoop or throwing a one-kneed block is never going to be as effective as a squared up, two-kneed block, which I've seen 14 yr old girls master. It's driving me crazy and getting me in trouble waking up DW and DD (Darling Dog).

Particularly egregious examples (from BOTH sides) played major game-outcome-altering roles in the last 3 or 4 days during Bos v KC ( Perez and Vazquez) and Bos v Cle (Vazquez and Gomes). Maybe Jay's summer Catching Camp session can squeeze in one or two more students tomorrow- it's just over an hour from Fenway!

I feel you. That's why I pretty much quit watching the catchers of both Baseball and Softball games. It's gotten to the point where the only catchers I care about are DD and the ones I train/work with.

I am sure they can all do it properly it is just that with some of them catching 150+ games they choose to conserve energy it seems..same thing as running out ground balls. How many guys in MLB do you see bust their butts running to first on a routine ball hit to SS??

Debatable about whether they can IMO, but late in the game with potential tying or go ahead runs on base is not a time to be conserving energy.

Gomes last night cost his team the win on the DK3 that would have ended the game. You'd think you could do more than jog after a ball when it's a potential game ender.

But not until after Cleveland scored the go ahead run in the top of the ninth on a misguided smothering attempt by Vazquez at a curve in the dirt with the bases full!

Our HS coach teaches what you saw on TV
The catcher's get yelled at if they move over to block, and he wants them to glove the ball or one knee block at most.

My DD #2 doesn't listen to him when she catches... plays dumb, blocks with 2 knees, and gets yelled at.
And then smirks as she's throwing the blocked/caught ball back to the pitcher...:D.

I don't understand how just blocking with just your glove or at most one knee would be effective. I would think the ball would get away from you faster and easier blocking that way. Personally, I block the way your daughter blocks. I get down on both knees and get my glove down. That way the ball can hit my wrist guards and chest protector. I've always gotten high praise from my coaches for how I block.

You're doing it right.

I think sluggers post was sarcastic implying the coach is an idiot on this issue which is why his DD just smiles and nods.
