If you all remember, we left our team this past Spring because my daughter was getting very little playing time on a B team. When I say very little, I mean like 3 innings per tournament defensively at ANY position. In the beginning of the Spring, her and the other catcher we're basically splitting games. My DD seemed to be the better blocker/receiver and the other catcher seemed to have the better arm. But only slightly, both ways. By that I mean, my DD was the better blocker/receiver SLIGHTLY, and the other catcher was the better arm SLIGHTLY. Honestly overall they seemed pretty even. My daughter had one tournament where she had two kids steal on her and the opposing coach (who was coaching third) made some sort of comment about his girls to keep running because that particular game my DD wasn't throwing so hot. Our coach heard him, yanked my DD and from that game on she got very limited playing time. It's like the coach gave up on her right then and there. Looking back, that's when her playing time stopped. She was never given a chance to redeem herself. I should add, that team was not practicing outdoors so in practice the catchers never got regular practice on throw downs. My daughter was/is still working on the side with a catching coach to improve her throw plus keep up on her blocking skills. But it didn't matter so we ended up leaving. Sorry to say, but in that situation she really wasn't given a chance to redeem herself. In fact she pretty much got benched. A catcher can't develop that way. We would have even stayed if the playing time was say, 60/40. But it wasn't. Anyway she ended up on another B team and she got ample playing time, had fun and the amazing thing is, I watched her throw get better. Actually over the last few weeks it really got better. She can, and probably will return to this team. (The new one we joined in the Spring). She wants to attend two A team tryouts, even if it's just to gauge where she is at. She went to an A team tryout over the weekend. They had two returning catchers and 3 that were trying out. The two returners were very good. I think one wasn't a primary position catcher, but did catch sometimes. My DD threw great! She got invited back. My point of the story is, when we changed teams she found a coach that didn't give up on her. She worked hard (and continues the side work), and gained her confidence back. At one point she was ready to give up and that's when I knew it was necessary to get her into a different environment. She loves the game again. She is a stronger player now than what she was in March.
