I'm sure this one has been addressed before so please point me in the right direction...

DD is catching for a girl who has a bit of velocity for her age. We are in the process of breaking in a new mitt, but it will not be ready for some time. DD was put on the team to split time with another catcher who is having issues with her catching hand/thumb. In the mean time any suggestions for padding or bracing the catching hand while we waiting on the new glove ?

So Cal
The Evoshield Thumb Guard is very effective for protecting a catcher's thumb and thumb joint. Highly recommended.

There aren't enough emoji's, like buttons, and plus signs to agree with Eric.

Jam a thumb once, and the likelihood of a repeat occurrence seems to skyrocket. Took me several years to learn I was holding the glove wrong (sideways, w/ my thumb on the bottom, instead of in a more upright "v"). Since I started using one about 3 years ago - 0 issues. Except that one time, when I forgot it in the dugout. But I was catching the slowest pitcher on our team (almost slowest in the league) - didn't matter - jammed it on the first or second warm-up pitch.

I probably need to upgrade my $70 Mizuno glove (and my overall skillset!), but for me, if I had to rank the most important pieces of equipment, I'd go cup, thumb guard, and glove, in that order. I don't know if your daughter already has a catchers mitt, and is just breaking in a new one - as I'm not sure how well a guard would fit inside a regular fielding glove.

For general padding - they make "batting" gloves with extra padding in the palm and fingers that may help.

The is also a glove called the Team Defender that has built in thumb protection. DD uses the Evoshield but I know a couple of kids that swear by the glove.

DD went with the Evo Shield - just wanted to say "Thanks" for the response. This message board is the #1 tool every parent should have (too cheesy ?).

Good call on the Evo Shield. I got catcher's thumb 25 years ago and I just never felt comfortable behind the plate again. I always thought I was going to jam it. About once a year I'll still jam it catching, or even on the steering wheel. It's not a fun injury.

we got an EVOshield for DD, she sprained her thumb in game monday, last night was playoff game. had no idea it was a moldable till we opened it. molded it, she complained it was too hot, we left it on anyway. she caught three innings last night (pitched other three). seems to work OK. took some time to get mitt on with it on her hand (31.5 inch mitt, she is 10u), then it simply stayed in mitt when she took the mitt off. we just left it, and she works thumb into as she puts mitt on, I think I like it better that way, less chance of getting lost.

update, DD has since ditched it, said it was too hard to get mitt on. probably just a case of her hands and correspondingly mitt are so tiny. will try a glove for all stars. thumb is better now as well, has not complained at all for several days about it.
