IMG_6416.jpgShe had a fantastic freshman season so in no way am I trying to be critical but this picture on the controversial ball/strike call in the Bama-UM game is a great lesson. Not only did the catcher frame what was already a strike, she's practically leaning against the back stop. I was stunned when I saw how far she was back in the box. While it's where the pitch crosses the plate, she didn't do her pitcher any favors.

Watching games on just ESPN and ESPN2 this weekend I saw an awful lot of pulling pitches and other non-high level play. Makes me wonder just how much the non best of the best college coaches really know and understand about catching.

The 3-0 pitch was in the same spot and the catcher did the same thing (I wouldn't call it framing, not by my definition) moving the glove up, and got the call. Playing with fire going to the well twice in that situation, IMO. I didn't see from the TV view how far back she was, very interesting.

With all the bad mechanics, I am starting to think my DD just may be able to get a softball scholarship with no problem! ;)

Has anyone noticed that most of the college catchers keep their mitt closed (or at least not completely open) until the pitch is almost to them? Is the correct way to catch or just some kind of personal preference? My DD sets herself up for the pitch, with mitt wherever it's supposed to be, but open the whole time.

DD pitches to part of catcher's body, she does not pay attention to thier mitt that I am aware of. She does not like a catcher that can not stay still.

Each thier own though, not sure there is a right anwser.

Generally speaking, the position of catcher is the most poorly-coached position in the game...at all levels.

Mitt open or closed isn't something I worry too much during setup.
