Dd10 is a first year 10u LL catcher. What should I instruct her to do when there's a runner on third and the batter stands like a statue in the box?

Our 10u league this year is pretty young and inexperienced, so this happens frequently (even with my own players). I keep waiting for one to get run over by the runner.

Are you talking about what to do if there is a passed ball/ wild pitch?

If so this happened to us last night in our first game 10u also, first game played with drop third strike and could steal home for most of the girls on the team. The umpire approached the head coach and told him to make sure that the girls are aware that they need to get out of the way on a wild pitch/passed ball or they will be called out. Head coach told the umpire thank you, and we informed the girls and it was not an issue the rest of the game.

Have the coach approach the umpire about the situation and the girls will figure it out quickly. Take 15 minutes during the next practice to go over this scenario.

Good luck with your season.

Assuming an RHB, unless the runner is coming home, that is exactly what the batter should be doing. Otherwise the catcher needs to make the play and not be afraid to make contact with the batter. This should result in an interference call, givng you the out and a dead ball. Which when it is all said and done is the very best outcome.

So what is the call if the catcher is trying to pick off the runner leading off at third and the RHB is still in the box? I've heard two different opposing views from my daughters coaches over the past couple of seasons.

If the batter doesn't move in a manner to get in the way of the catcher's ability to throw, there's no interference. If the batter remains in the box, the catcher needs to work around her to create a clear throwing lane.

The two things that people get confused about are from two different plays.

If a runner is advancing to home, then the batter must vacate any area needed by the defense to complete the play. The batter is required to get out of the way.

On a pick off throw to a base, the batter may hold her position. She can't impede the play by either stepping out of the box or by moving around inside the box.

This is what I needed. Thanks. Dd10 is unsure how aggressive to be. I think it's because she's 5'2"/97# already, and a lot of the 9 y.o. are close to a foot shorter, lol. She jumped up to run a girl back to third and bumped the batter with her glove arm as she went. One of the opposing team's mothers was screaming at the PU about it.
